I have a 2003 C230 4matic wagon. Both my left and right secondary catalytic converters vibrate and I was told I need to replace them. I had different dealerships tell me that I need different parts ranging from $200 each to $1,000 each. What's the best route to take to get this fixed. I don't mind for replacing the whole pipe as long as the price is reasonable under $600. I don't want loud or aftermarket exhaust that I am going to have to replace again in 10,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated!
Find an exhaust shop to cut open the secondary cats, gut them and weld them back up. The secondary cats won't affect your emissions test since all the o2 sensors are upstream and you'll gain a bit of power. The later m272 powered cars had the secondary cats deleted from the factory.
Both my secondary cats started to rattle inside their housing. I ordered OE "rebuilt" replacements from one of the online vendors (RM European) and was very happy with the product. They were exactly like the originals I removed from my C240. Everything was exact right down to the flange thickness and the shape of the cats. Price was very reasonable at the time I replaced mine.
I save the original exhaust/cats and stuck a long pry bar up the rear part of the exhaust and broke up all the material in the rear cat. Cleaned it all out and looked inside with one of those inspection cameras to make sure all material was removed.
Going to put originals (with rear cat material removed) back on, if or when the replacement ones on the car start to rattle.
