oil consumption

My 2005 C240, 202,000 miles, seems to be steadily increasing it's oil consumption. I've gone from adding 1 qt (based on the warning message) every 3000 miles to about 1000 miles. There seemed to be some correlation in the increase when I replaced the oil vapor removal hoses, but I've gone from about 2,000 miles to the present 1,000 even since then. The engine is not burning oil, visibly that is, and there are no obvious leaks, in fact the engine looks quite dry. Could the sensor be going bad? I've been reluctant to add any more oil at this point and am purchasing a dipstick for it. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Jeff

Just curious, did you get under the car to look for leaks? Sometimes leaks happen when the car is running and a lot of the evidence is blown away from the car moving. I didn't know about the power steering leak in my GL450 until I was under it. You could see where it was spraying the bottom of the car, but it wasn't leaving much evidence in the driveway.

Adding too much oil can be bad for seals, or worse. I've read that it can cause the oil to get "foamy" and pull air into the oil pump, though I've never seen this first hand. I'd definitely get a dip stick in there before I added more oil. Interested to see if anyone else know the affects of adding too much oil.

I remember when oil was changed every 6000miles and it was pretty much expected to top up with a quart in between. Engines have come a long way baby!

There's honestly no need. Do you know about the secret menu? The car has a sensor to give a much more precise oil reading (accurate to 0.1L) than the regular layman menu.
