Is it time to replace the dreaded timing chain?
So my C160 with the 1.8L Kompressor has 129800 miles on the odometer and I keep getting a check engine light with the code reading out:
P2054 Continuous camshaft adjustment, Incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft [P0020]
And it comes back really quickly after getting cleared (mile or two of driving). The engine seems to run smoothly, idles at a normal 900rpm, no rattling or anything unusual upon startup- there's nothing noticeably wrong with it other than the CEL.
Is this most likely the timing chain needing a replacement or could it be something else (hopefully a lot cheaper to fix)? Changing the timing chain basically totals the car right now

The very least you can do is to pop open the valve cover and inspect chain and sprockets. Use the crank pulley to turn the engine clockwise (easier with the spark plugs removed), locate TDC and see how far off the exhaust cam is. Maybe all you need is a new cam sensor. Depending on condition, the VC gasket is reusable.
