Angry A crack on front Windshield

I woke up yesterday and was about to drive my car and noticed a crack on the front windshield.

WHY? why was there a crack I asked myself. I was driving to my friends the day before and parked it at his apartment complex for an afternoon. Maybe someone rocked it? Or was it a rock from the truck I tried to pull away from? Or (finger crossed) Warranty Issue?

Regardless, it was too late. Called a dealer and quoted me about $600 for it, $2-300 for the material and double it for the labor. Is this right?

I felt very bad yesterday because of this...

How big is the crack?

I've got one in the lower portion of the passenger's side - local glass company is fixing it tomorrow at work for $60. They said that they would fix anything an inch longer or less.

Is the crack the entire width of the car? I'm sure that MB windshields are expensive, though. Did you contact your insurance? Some places will pay for the entire thing. I was pretty pissed about mine when I noticed it yesterday, too, but was happy that the repair was going to be so little.

Thanks,

It looks like a half Circle, about 7" long. I don't think it can be repaired.

That's my struggle. I might pay for it myself instead of going insurance because don't want to drive the cost of insurance up too much. Already paying pretty high for it since I am only 24.

tommy, glad to hear they can repair yours.

Wow! That was some pebble!

Yeah, you're screwed. That's amazing.

Do you have the rain sensor? Just wondering how that adds to the replacement price.

Leepolun, I'm sorry, that bites. I hope your insurance can help. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, comprehensive claims do not raise your rates, collision claims do? You might want to check into.

Tommy, insurance companies usually pay for this. Their logic is a crack might get filled with water and freeze and then total your Windshield. GEIGO did mine for free a few years ago. Before you pay, check with your carrier.

Re: A crack on front Windshield

We had same exact problem one morning in mid-March! Did not hit anything, it simply cracked at the right top. My wife immediately took it to a dealer (Smythe at San Jose) and they confimed it was due to internal stress in the glass since there was no trace of rock hitting it whatsoever and promised to replace it under WARRANTY.
The new glass arrived recently (we got postcard) and the appointment is on 4/24 to have it replaced.

As always the case, after that original small crack discovery it grew bigger. Then, few days back when she was driving on 280 and rock did hit (not hard!) the windshield it developed the new crack.

It appeares the windshield glass is very gragile on this car. I hoped that was just our particular sample since no one reported the same problem on this board up until now. When did you buy your car leepolun? I wonder if we got same production batch or something. We got ours from Smythe on 3/2.

On the insurance note. I had windshield on my MR2 replaced last year (after the rock from truck in front hit really hard, admittably). Just paid my comprehansive deductible of $120
out of pocket. The guy came over to my work parking lot and replaced it in an hour or so.

Thanks for all the helpful information.

I hope it's under warranty too since I am not quite sure what caused it. I will check with my insurance comany too thanks.

apkom, so you had the same issue? I bought my car in mid Oct, 2001. So I think it might be different producton times. But I will take it to the dealer today to see what they say. Maybe I get lucky enough and they do the warranty as well. There is no sign of a rock mark so I am very curious.

I do have rain sensor and the cracki crossed over a bit, so maybe I need to have that looked at as well.

Try to make MB pay for it instead like I said.

If this fails, I think using insurance to pay for
windshield replacement/repair is not going to drive your cost. I did not notice an increase when I used mine (not on the coupe). It seems like they (insurance companies) have sort of a threshhold on comprehansive coverage ($500-1000) which if you don't go over it does not count. You can always ask your insurance agent.

Good luck with your windshield repair/replacement. One thing to be aware of. Most insurance companies do not want to cover the cost of an OEM windshield -- they want you to use a 3rd party glass. If you are working with your dealer this might not be an issue. I had to have my windshield replaced on my previous Passat. The glass place actually had to replace it twice because they screwed up. I would try to get M-B to replace it under warranty. If that doesn't work, I'd demand the insurance company to cover the OEM windshield cost since the car is so new. Just my $.02.

I am an Insurance agent/Computer person. In NC your insurance WILL NOT go up due to a Comp claim. It will only go up for a Collision claim. Although If you have more than 3 or 4 Comprehensive claims during a policy period you could stand the chance of getting your policy cancelled, but 1 or 2 should never be a problem.

If anyone in NC ever needs insurance just let me know, or if you have insurance questions either!

Yes, same issue exact. Upon sudden morning discovery It ran at first from top right corner towards rear mirror attachment area for about 5". Then it got quite longer and turned up a bit.
I can take a pic today and post it.
Also, I have rain sensor as well.

Too bad about your window. I know that insurance differs from state to state, so you should really talk to your insurance person. I had a Jeep Wrangler before, and in 6 years, I had to replace the window 3 times. There were always rocks bouncing off of it. The window was almost verticle, so it damaged pretty easy. In Massachusetts, you can get glass coverage in your insurance. There's no deductible, and I believe your insurance rate will not go up because of a claim. Plus, they replace the window if the crack is more than an inch. In Ohio, it is part of the regular comp, so you get stuck with the deductible. I think it's that way here in Texas too.

Good luck, and let us know what the outcome is.

Took it down to the dealer just now, no luck.

The guy said a rock hit the corner (between the glass and border) and when the pressure change the crack grew into a half circle. I didn't look at it closedly at first, but saw the rock dent after he pointed it out. $600 to fix it.

Sh#@! Motherf*&%$@@!

The guy came to fix my little chippette in my windshield. He put the little tripod thingy on the outside, and started to screw it down. That's when the crack just kept on comin'. So, I need a brand-new spanking windshield now

Just to make sure, you don't need to go through the dealership for this kind of thing, do you?

Ohhh, Tommy, the evil glass meanies are going to pay for it...right? I would think with a c2 package you need to go through the dealer. Put a claim in on your insurance. They should take care of this.

I could be wrong, but I remember a post awhile ago about the rain sensor NOT being part of the windshield. If this is the case, then I don't see why a outside vendor would not be able to replace it.

Well, they called my dealer, and they gave them a rough quote of about $1500! Talk about not using vasoline! So, they're checking with the company that tried to fix the small chip, and I've got to call them back to see what the difference in price is. If I still want to do it at my dealership, I'll have to pony up the extra $$, which I'm not really inclined to do if it's an additional $900!

Luckily, my deductible is only $250, so that's my out-of-pocket cost only. But, damn. Remind me to not have my dealership do any repairs, once the car's out of warranty.

Hey Tommy,

Sorry to hear the similar bad news, it's bad...

Hey, I got a quote from 2 dealers in the bay area and to replace the windshield you need new winshield + sealing kit = $~300, Labor ~ $300. And I took it to a third party "Glass on a Go" that fixes and replaces windshields, I guess they are experts, and they quoted me $541.

When I took my car to the dealer, the service did use a pen to poke the rock chip a little to make it more obvious so MB doesn't have to pay for it.

I am getting another quote from another person, he should be cheaper, but if it's not too much cheaper, I rather just replace it at the dealer. I wonder how they come up with $1500!! I think that must be a mistake.

What is worse then what is already happening?

Well, my car is dirty, I have white. And I am afraid to take it to the car wash galaxygrrl recommanded because I am afraid the crack will further extend...

I also found out why my insurance is so cheap for my age, because my deductable for both type of claims are $1000...

If you don't get the repair done at your dealer, be sure the place you choose matches the C7 tint and replaces the rain sensor module. You might also confer with MBUSA to determine if this voids any part of your warranty or star certification.

$300 for an OEM windshield sounds very low to me. When I had my Passat windshield replaced, they told me an OEM for that might be $700 just for the glass.

got it fixed today

Okay, as planned I brought our coupe to Smythe European this morning, drove '2000 C230 Kompressor loaner to work and on my way back home picked up the coupe washed and with brand new windshield installed. It was warranty work, so no out-of-pocket expenses.

Let it be the second and last problem ;-)

By the way, leepolun, low comprehensive deductible (mine is 120) makes monthly premium just a bit higher. So I chose to have $1000 for collision and $120 for comprehensive. Check with your agent.
Hope you got yours replaced for a resonable price.

I got it fixed too, but my was not not under warranty so I paid $565 for labor and new wind shield. no loaner car as well.

Dealers are actually not too expensive, I got quoted form third parties for about the same too.

apkom,
I have $1000 for comprehensive and collision, that's why my insurance is cheap I guess. So I just paid out of my pocket for it... Oh well, I learned my lesson not to drive behind a truck again. I didn't even know it was from the road... But the service rep showed me the rock chip mark.

I am glad it's all over so that I can have it washed finally. It's really dirty now...

For Tommy

Did you get your quotes again from other dealers? Because $1500 is very far from what I paid and got quoted for. And I am in the Bay Area where everything cost a little extra...

I would recheck with another dealer.
