2007 Mercedes C 230
07 C230 timing chain/cam issues

Hi everyone, my 07 C230 began making a ticking noise a while back. Not super tekkie here so bear with me! Had the car in the MB dealership a month ago and was told $5900 to replace timing chain and also that there’s done cam adjuster issue?? Car was driving ok but ticking and I have been trying to decide if spending that much $ is worth it.

Fast forward to today and a horrible clattering noise in my engine as well as the car shutting off while I was at a stoplight and the yellow yield light lit up. I restarted the car and got it home. Car only has 127,000 mi and has had Mobil 1 synthetic oil since I purchased it in 2009 as well as premium fuel at all times. Anyone else who can relate to this? Any advice?? I keep reading about MB having had problems with both of these things happening in W203’s. My cars in great shape otherwise so I’m pretty freaked out right now.

Did your mechanic mention the balance shaft?
These engines (M272) have 2 main issue, balance shafts and intake manifolds.
If there's issues with the cam timing, it could be the balance shaft.
It wears down to a nub and lets the chain get loose, causing all manner of
problems. If he want 6 grand to replace the timing chain he's nuts.
We had our balance shaft replaced on ML recently and along with many other repairs spent a total of 6 grand,
which included a manifold, starter, alternator, power steering pump and rack and much more,

Stuck and Frustrated

Hi thanks for the reply, I’ve been trying to figure out what’s the best way to deal with this all and who to take it to since I’m not a fan of the dealer. The mechanic did mention the cam shaft balance issue and that it has been a big problem on this model. Current nada value is around 5K on the car although I’ve seen them online for as much as 9K. Seems like a huge cost won’t be worth the $ if it goes past the car’s value but it isn’t driveable now or at least I don’t think I should drive it for fear of making it a worse issue. The car has been maintained well and I’m really disappointed in MB right now. It’s my 1st MB and I love the car but it’s maybe an issue that’s been caused by faulty parts from a car manufacturer that should be putting the best into its cars not parts that will cause problems for owners.
