2005 C230 K Sedan non staggered wheels

New member, lurking since NJ CSpot in 2003. Considering 2005 c230 Sedan, 6mt. My 2 primary concerns are 1)Reliability since I put about 28-30k miles per year and would like to keep for 5 years 2)Tire options with staggered rears being 8.5 X 17 wheels fitting 245/40/17. I love the 5 spoke wheels, but would like a set of rears matching the fronts so I can rotate, and have a little better choice in tires for NJ winters. Do you know if a dealer will swap the standard rear wheels for a set of the 7.5 X 17 versions fitting 225/45/17 that come in the front, or even if they might sell 1 pair of them to me?

You can buy just 2 from the dealer, I they used to run around $300 each in past years + the 2 new tires of course. As far as reliability, if you are going to put that many miles on it you may want the extended warranty from either MB or a 3rd party on the net. S/C's have been known to go in the 80K mile range on the older motors and that's a $3,500 repair as well as other things that can go wrong. Even something simple like an A/C compressor can run you $1,500. Personally, I like my benzes but I wouldn't want to have it without a warranty, the repairs are just too expensive and you never know what's going to happen.

If you believe in surveys, MB didn't do too well in the JD Power 3 year dependability survey or the Consumer Reports Surveys. It did great, #1 in fact in the Top Quality Survey from Strategic Vision, but that's just a 90 survey, doesn't say much about long term reliability.

I have a 2002 Passat now and have been riddled with problems currently at 65000 miles. I am very upset with the quality of this vehiche, but the greater concern is that when something is "fixed" it doesn't stay fixed because the work was not done properly in the first place. While I recognize that an MB repairs may be rather expensive and more common than say on an Acura, what has your experience been with the result of repairs done by MB, for instance, have the encountered problems remained fixed?

I've only had one thing fixed, which was broke at delivery time. It has stayed fixed. If you put that many miles on any car, I too would recommend the S/C. The Dealer in Chico, CA will sell it to you at a good price over the phone. It covers everything but the stereo for some strange reason. An D/C dealer and also sell you a factory S/C.

The 5 spoke wheels are $992 a set retail. Two 7.5's should only be $500, but shop around. You can put 225/45-17 tires on the 8.5 inch rims or use 234/45-17 tires.

Reliability is all about luck. I have had my car for 18 months with no issues what so ever. There are others who are lucky as well. Then are those with constant nagging problems from electronics and some even had lemons. I did a poll and its about 50/50 I believe. It is a risk. Reliability is one of my top 3 concerns as well, and so far its been flawless.

I do hear complaining about minor electrical issues, but few serious issues.
