should I trust the oil reading?

Hi, I just did the oil change with new oil and air filters on my 2003 C240. I put in 7.5L of 0w40 oil, but when I checked the reading on the instrument display, it just showed 7.0L! I also checked the oil level, it showed "Engine Oil Level OK". I did the checking after warming up a bit and let the car off and sat about 5min. Should I add another 0.5L oil?

Also, I found some yellowish margarine-like stuff near the oil cap (some right on the cap and some near the opening). I didn't notice that on my last oil change. It is a bit late to do the oil change this time though (about 1 and 1/2 year with 7500km with Mobile 1 0W40). Does anyone know what is that and should I clean that up?

Thanks.

Keep in mind that your filter holds oil also, so that would be about your .5L.

Yellowish...froth...usually means moisture in the oil.

Oil dip stick doesn't exist here anymore......I too was troubled many years earlier for the (no more transmission 'dip' stick......) And the ignorant world followed for OK! Ignorant people now lead our world...even while their non, or NO dipstick, reads 11/16th low of oil....Who needs a dip-stick...foool?

Yellowish oil residue

Thats usually water in the oil from a leaking head gasket or something similar.

I've changed the oil on our 2010 for 12 years now and never had any issues like your having.

Is the yellow froth on the dipstick? If not maybe it wasn't in good and the slightly overfill mixed with moisture in the air...never seen that but if the dipstick is normal it shouldn't be an issue.
