Surprisingly Good Gas Mileage
36.2 mpg Exceeds the EPA Estimate
I drove from the Richmond, VA suburbs this morning. When I arrived in Norfolk I checked the trip computer and was pleased to see excellent fuel economy. There may have been some special circumstances that led to this:
1. Temperatures were ideal and I didn't need to use the air conditioner
2. Richmond is at an elevation of about 170 feet and Norfolk is at sea level so the trip was downhill
3. My route took me through several construction zones which forced me to drive below the posted speed of 70 mph. (If you've lived in Virginia, you are probably aware that they take speed enforcement seriously. The first sign you see when you drive into Virginia says "Welcome to Virginia." The second says "Radar detectors illegal" so I expect that some visitors think it is the state motto.)
4. Traffic was fairly light and I didn't hit any backups.

Including my drive back and two days of commuting, I traveled a total of 381.6 miles. I used 12.004 gallons of gas for an average fuel economy of 31.789 mpg. My commuting includes some stop and go and low speed driving, so I expect that reduced my fuel economy below the level I saw with highway driving on Sunday.
