TINY TINY Little Welder needed !
I need some help.
Is this POSSIBLE?
Here is the back story.
Have a C230, I love it.
Car key was old and falling apart. Key failed last week and I am not able to LOCK car with key. (I can unlock, open trunk and Panic button work just fine)
Bought a new Key casing and when I was transferring the guts from the old battery to the new one, I noticed that the button to lock the car had broken loose. It looks like it just snapped off and the soldering just broke.... BUT.... I DONT KNOW.
Here is the question.
CAN THE BUTTON ATTACHED TO THE CIRCUT BOARD BE RE-ATTACHED?
The rest of the project worked out great... The new FOB looks great and functions well with the old guts. I can start the car, UNLOCK the car, Pop the Trunk and the Panic button works perfect.
I'm attaching pictures for a point of reference.
Insights?
The button is intact..... if pressed it still "clicks".
Who can I take this to and have it soldered back on?
Computer repair guy?
Jeweler?
Hobbyist?
The Answer:
Go to/Call a place that repairs cell-phones. Ask if they do: soldering.
That is realistically, likely, your only option.
A computer repair place does not solder. (Note, a very few do solder. But, they are often specialty shops.)
A jeweler solders metal pieces (like small delicate chains).
The Tech, more info:
On a high level:
Soldering and welding are two very different things.
Welding:
When two pieces of metal are welded, the metal is fully melted for both pieces, then the liquified metals mix together (along with maybe with a filler rod/material), and then re-solidifies to metal.
A properly welded joint is stronger than the other metal parts.
Soldering:
This uses conductive material (solder) to bind two metal items (wire, button pin/lead, circuit board, etc).
The solder "chemically" attaches to the two metal items.
However, neither of the metal items melt.
Think of solder "kind of like" electrically conductive glue.

I hope the above helps.
For others that with b**tch about my high-level explanations above, then ***** *** ***** ****** ******.

Good Luck!

Have the place re-solder the button to the old circuit board ("PCB"), and then put the assembly into the new case.
My guess is that you're looking at under an hour's worth of work.
So, maybe between $50 to $150??
Rates vary massively.
Good Luck!
