Why does MB need to slot a car between the E and the S...and to try and play a 4 door off as a coupe? This just isn't what the US car buying market is looking for. I'd never buy one....would you?

 

Yes, there techincally no need for this car, but who cares? I think it's a great looking car. It's longer and much lower than I expected it to be. Like a German Jaguar. Plus it's based on an existing platform, so it probably relatively inexpensive to develop (as opposed to an entirely new platform).

And keep in mind, while most people here are hardcore M-B fanatics, most people really aren't car buffs (hence all the Camrys that are sold in this country). I don't think it will be a sales disaster. Basically (and sadly), slap a three-pointed star on anything and it will sell for just that reason.

I love the CLS. The True E class based Coupe, err coupe appearance. Either way its HOT! And the black one rock posted makes we weak in the knees.

CLS500 should be around 70,000 I think. just like the 6 series.

 

it's not a direct competitor for the 6-series. It's not even a coupe. It's just MB's attempt to gain more market share as BMW is doing that same w/ the X3, 1/2 series, and the 6 series which the other brand doesn't have these type of cars.

 

to me the 6 series coupe is more like a CL. then again the cabrio version of the 6 has no competitor in my eyes other than a SC430, but only similarity i see in those two cars is the useless backseat.

 

Thats absurd to compare a 6 to a CL, dont ever do that!

 

if you remember the first 6-series WAS based off the 7-series and the 8-series was sort of the 7 coupe too. It's just this generation they made the car w/ useless back seat, so IMO the 6 is still a CL fighter. Wait till the mags pit the CL55 against the M6 when it arrives.

either way, i don't bother to compare'em. The only match up i can think of are C32/C55 vs M3 vs S4, E55 vs M5 vs RS6 vs StypeR, XJR vs S55, M-roadster vs SLK32, and that's about it.

 

I dont know anything about BMWs history so ill take your word. Ive seen the 6 in person several times now. It does APPEAR to look like a 7 series coupe and thats a good thing. But its still based on the 5. Just like the W209 appears like the W211 but is based on the W203. IMO MB should have made the CLS a coupe but its still looks damn nice Sedan. The CLS and 6 are competitors! They are going ot be similarly priced and coming off there midsize sedan platforms. I can say the C32/55 is not a vaild comparison the m3 since it is a Sedan! then the CLK55 is the best comparison with the m3. but there is a 20k diffrenece in price. its not going to work. Same with the 6 and CL. There is a 30k diffrence in price.

i didnt mean in looks. i love the CL! i meant in overall funtion, large 4 seat coupe, just as the CL. the rear seat in the 6 is pretty useless though compared to the large rear seat of the CL.

and the 6 is more of a 5 series coupe too, but IMO is more 7 series sized. i again agree with frank, when comparisons are done in the mags, more than likely it will be CL verses 6, not CLK verses 6.
