Replacing rear speaker cover on C coupe?

Anyone have any experience taking off the rear speaker covers (i.e., the plastic grill thing) on the C coupe? There are 4 'lower' speakers on the doors, so I'm talking about the 'rear' lower door speakers.

I was unlucky enough to slam my door on something in the back seat, cracking the speaker cover. After some mis-ordered parts, I got a spare cover from MB (~$28). At first glance, I can't tell if this thing just pulls off. Please tell me it isn't screwed on from the rear side...I would really not have to take the door panel off.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I've done it and the door panel has to come off. They apparently put the grille in and melt the back ends to hold it in place. The dealer put mine in and found more warranty repairs on the inside of the door. They replaced the grab handle and mounts. The total bill was disgusting for a speaker grille replacement. The only reason I took it in was I needed an oil change too....You should be able to handle this yourself. There is a screw behind the airbag badge and one toward the back of the door by the hinge. I think the rest are compression fit on the bottom of the door. Good luck....

I wish mine would have just been a crack. The one and only time I let my dad drive the car he slams the seat-belt latch in the door. Never mind the resistance, just keep slamming!!!

The part is real cheap though and it can be done in no time at all.

I know the feeling....I am sort of a perfectionist!! Mine had to be replaced as it had 2 huge holes and was being held by one peg.

Thanks for the reply and helpful information. I was afraid this wouldn't be easy.

What sort of melting is required to attach the new cover?!

I don't mind taking a little time to take the door panel off, but don't want to be out there with a lighter or something trying to attach the new cover. Can you give a little more detail on what you mean?

I am not sure what they used, as my dealer did mine. A solder iron or similar device with a removable tip comes to mind for me. I don't think that a lighter would do the trick. I think that I have read on this forum that someone used a screw on the backside instead of melting the pegs. I have not seen it taken apart, so I would just suggest wait and see once your door panel is removed to find out what you are working with.

The instruction is for the Sedan, the ones for the Coupe is different. Don't try to pry off the door handle cap! No need and it's SCREWED from the inside!

You can use screws to put the new speaker grill back as what I did on my car - no melting needed.

Sorry about that. I have the Sedan and didn't realize it was different for the coupe. Are the back panels different? If nothing else mostolf might be able to check out the photos to see how the grill is attached.
