Hello,
Seeing that we don’t know what your model is, or at least I can’t on my phone, I’d say buy two. You’ll need one, and for the couple of bucks change them out. If one has shorted, tripping the light, you’ll want to change it anyway...

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Go ahead and get the sensors. Your car will have two of them - one on a front wheel, one on a rear. There are two styles of sensors. One is a single-wire that triggers when it shorts to ground (via touching the rotor). The other is a two-wire (looped) design, which will also trigger when grounded, but also will trigger when the looped circuit is broken. With the two-wire design, once the wire is broken, it must be replaced. With the single wire, as long as the plastic probe that inserts into the pad is still mostly intact, it can be reused. However, I'd replace them anyway. They are inexpensive, so it's just better to put in new ones while doing the brake job.

The sensor is in a 'closed' state normally. If you wear the pads down enough you will wear the sensor to the point where the contacts will 'open' up. At this point you will need to replace the sensor. Yes, get a new sensor along with your new pads. You might not necessarily have to replace both front and rear pads/sensors. If you've gotten to the point of the sensor tripping the light you'll want to replace the pads very soon if not immediately.

FWIW over the 15 years I’ve owned my w203...it has illuminated the MFD warning of “Brakes” when the brakes where very much within spec, and it has even illuminated the warning after full replacement and all new parts, as recently as this fall...

In the first type of instance I replaced the sensor as I inspected the pads and rotors...

This fall it tripped the warning once, out of nowhere and “knock knock” has not returned...
