Who carries a big toolbox in the boot.

I remember my brother saying about the small toolkit he carried in his boot. He said. "If he can't repair it with the small kit then the job was too big to do at the roadside." Ever since then I left my toolbox at home and just bought a small toolkit from Halfords. PS That was back in the good old days of the Morris 1000

Having tools is kind of pointless if you don't have spares. I only bring my tool box on long trips (400 miles+). I I keep a scan tool in the trunk (foxwell nt520) and some spares in the trunk at all times. These are the small items most likely to fail but difficult to find in a pinch.
crank sensor
Ignition coil
Voltage regulator
Fuses
transmission dip stick

It all fits in a Ziploc bag in the spare tire well. I also have a full size spare because 50 miles at 50mph on a doughnut spare is useless when I'm halfway between LA and Vegas.

Standard kit while traveling.

Traveling tool kit.

Most tools purchased from Harbor Freight with bag and booster cables for less than $100.

Also spare bulbs and oil.

My daughters have a similar kit for when they’re away at school. Bulbs, boosters, multimeter get the most use. No one has had to change a tire away but breaker bar and socket would be essential if they do. They know how to do this if necessary.

Cheap scanner is there so if a CEL appears, they can scan and let me know the code.

Toolkit

Most purchased from Harbor Freight with booster cables and bag for about $100.

Also spare bulbs and a quart of oil.

My daughters also have this kit in their cars at school.

The boosters and multimeter get the most use. The breaker bar and 17mm socket are in case they have to change a tire. Hasn’t happened yet but they learned how to do it helping me swap snow tires.
