2003 C180K Engine Failure
but i still have a problem, everytime i started the car or i kickdown the pedal, there's white smoke from the exhaust.
but i felt everything is running smoothly, so i thought maybe i'll check that out later.
after about a month, my wife drove around and suddenly there was this rattle sound and white smoke from the engine bay. but the cat still runs. but when she opened the engine bay, shw noticed that there was this iron/alumunium crumbs..
and there's a hole in the engine block. can anyone tell what is this part called, i was thinking to buy a used one or maybe anyone can give me solutions 😊
I don't understand how the car/engine still runs.
It looks like the engine "threw a rod". More specifically, the "piston rod" broke somewhere, and part of it went through the engine block.
That Engine is garbage, the engine is worthless, the engine is junk, nothing in the engine is good enough shape to rebuild or to keep.
Below, (until ebay removes the listing), you can see an M271 engine block.
You can compare the area that is broken on your engine block, to the good engine block below:

From the ebay listing:

MERCEDES M271 ENGINE BLOCK C180 C200 C230 KOMPRESSOR
Btw, do not waste your time, nor money by replacing the engine block. The pistons must be matched to the block.
Also, as I said, because of the metal that went into the oil and then the rest of the engine, every part of that engine long block is garbage, junk. worthless. It any part is used, it's just a matter of time before it fails.
Sorry.
Hopefully, you can find a good used engine locally.
Also, you should change the timing chain on any used engine. When the timing chain fails, almost always, the engine is worthless.

I guess you can save the coolant pipes and maybe the top end, but the bottom end is definitely toast.
If you're going to get a new motor, try to get one off a 2005.

Metal got in the oil.
The oil was then pumped through-out the engine.
Anything that the oil touched is junk. It's just a matter of time before it fails.
The alternator, AC, etc are all fine.
Iirc, all pre-2007 M271 engines are the same.
What you want is one without a lot of mileage.
Still, the timing chain, like many things, can fail from age.
So, it should be replaced. If you replaced the cylinder head, replacing the timing chain is easy.
It's not hard to remove and replace the engine.
You want an engine hoist and an engine leveler. Both of those can be bought cheaply in the USA.
Just be careful to properly index/install the torque convertor. Do a search, there are a number of posts on how to do it.
Fwiw, that is true with any automatic transmission.
If you get another engine, there are a number of easy and cheap things that you can do, to greatly increase the chance that the engine will last a long time.
Overall, the M271 is a well built engine. It has a few weak points/parts. Take care of those parts, and an M271 engine can go 300K+ miles without a problem.
But, there have been M271 engines that have failed before 70K miles, because the timing chain went. Those engines where then junk/worthless.
Fwiw, as I mentioned before, I bought a C230K with under 85K miles, and in great shape.
Then, I put a lot of money into a perfectly fine running car.
Why? Because it's better to start with a great car, do a big part refresh, and then have a car that will last a long time.
I spent ~4-7 man-months deeply researching the C230K with an M271 engine, before I bought one. Then, I had to wait, and wait, and wait until I found the type of C230K I was looking for, and in the shape I was looking for. Imho, I got very lucky.
Good Luck!
