Unhappy My Broken Audio 10

So, the Audio 10 in dash cd player I installed works for 10 minutes, then the controls and stereo steering wheel controls stop functioning. Audio doesn't stop until I shut the car off. Has anyone else seen this problem? Has anyone else installed the audio 10 themselves and had it work, error free?

Thanks,
Craig

Craig, give us some more background on this: where did you get if from; has it begun playing up just recently or was it like this from the very beginning?

Just a thought: I'd try to disconnect the battery for a while in hope that this would reset the control unit and force it to re-register all components on the bus after the power has been reapplied... Again, this is just a "black box" guessing attempt...

Vadim,

I got it from an ebay.de auction. It was like this from the very beginning. Once the controls stop working, they do not work again until I unhool dthe audio 10, put the standard unit back in, and then swap it out again.

Now you tell me after I bought one. Other's have bought this radio and didn't have problems with it. I hope it's something simple like resetting the ECU. When you put the old radio in, does it do the same thing after 10 minutes? Does the radio still work fine except the steering wheel controls? Maybe you pinched a fiber optic cable when you installed the radio. That happened to me on my cd changer install.

Take it to your dealer and ask them to fix it under your warranty! :p

He would have to find a dealer in Germany and it may not be worth the shipping. The Audio 10 is not available in the U.S.

Id get your dealer to plug your car into the star diagnosis system, reconfigure the D2B bus, and check all the rest of the coding.

This is the kind of strange thing that can happen if the unit thinks stuff is on the D2B bus that isnt etc etc. or if the coding is badly wrong. (ie BOSE set on when its not there, Analogue bose set instead of digital etc etc etc)

The computer will know about the Audio-10-CD as its on european cars.

Alterative (of course) is that the unit is bust, but the dealer can read the fault codes from the unit and see if its complaining.

The old stereo works fine once I put it back in, so I doubt the fiber optics are bad. Not that the fiber optics even need to be connected for the stero to function. I will have to go to the dealer and get this looked at.... thanks for your input...

Its not the fibre optics being bad. Its what the head unit is programmed to expect being on the fibre optics, and is it different to what is actually there. The head-unit will be prorgammed for whatever was in the car that unit came out of (i.e probably nothing) - whereas in your US car, theres probably Teleaid, you may have phone/vcs possibly etc etc)
In StarDiagnosis theres a menu thats called (somthing like) "retrofotting stuff to the D2B bus" which causes the system to reconfigure its idea of whats on the D2B bus to match what is actually on it. Theres also a bunch of settings for the unit that can be done (such as speed related volume, whether the front-back fader should work (ie does car have rear speakers), and probably other stuff, *including* what model car the audio-10 is installed in. This all needs to be correct really.

Richard,

Do you think not having these settings programmed correctly is causing my problem?

Quite possibly - if its not that, then its a broken unit :-( Id particularly suspect that its "coded" for the wrong vehicle, so its getting/sending confusing stuff on the CANbus ..

Spoke to my dealer about it on Saturday during my weekly car wash and they said it probably needs something programmed so bring it in. I may have them install it so that they stand behind it and program it.

Do you have to pay for "weekly car wash"? My dealer told me that free car wash was is included with every car service... p.s. when I stop by to get something done to my car.

Most dealers around here give free car washes whenever you want them. The car wash is a hand wash, vacuum, clean windows inside and out, armour-all the tires and buff/wax once a year. They have 10 bays and should be doubling that soon. While they are washing your car they have small cubicle with a phone if you wish to conduct business, a play area for the kids, a large flat panel TV to watch, coffee, soda, water and cookies, muffins, apples. This was probably one of the deal makers on getting another MB after having so many problems with past ones.
