Camshaft Positioning Sensor Replacement

I have searched for video on how to and I cannot find one that shows how to replace the Camshaft Positioning Sensor on a M271. Most I see are on a v6. I got a P0365 Camshaft Position Sensor Right Bank 1 and was going to try replacing this first. Any hints or tricks would be appreciated.

The sensors on the front of the head that are notorious for leaking oil into the harness?

STF.

Hope that helps.

This is where I have read conflicting threads. I see where I have the pigtail style connector attaching to the magnets on the front of the head, much like the pictures you have in your thread above. I thought I read somewhere that the camshaft position sensor was on the backside of the head, in between the head and firewall. If it is the case of the first and these are actually connected to the magnet, then it should be no issue to replace them. But if its behind the head...I've dealt with other parts on German cars (2003 Passat coolant temp sensor) and would cringe on having to do that again.

Hi,
Did you pull the plug to see if there is oil in there?

On the newer engines, the cam position sensor is at the front, mounted to the cam cover. On the M271 can you take off the black plastic covers and see if the cam position sensors are in front? I looked for photos and could only find photos with the plastic cover attached, or with the entire cam cover removed.

Yes I did. Dry as a bone. I will get some pictures later this morning and post up.

Then, as your post title indicates, it’s probably not the magnet and is the actual lobe sensor- check here please:

Thank you for the pic! Checked both. On the exhaust side their was VERY little oil. And it was just in the inner edge. Inside looked clean. The top one looked very clean. It was newer looking and going through all the service receipts I see it was changed in 2017. 3 years ago but only 11k miles since then. Also noticed on the wire side the clips were broken. Still sits on the seat firm.

If it is the top one, then that is an easy fix. What's the torx size on that bolt?

Update: My iCarSoft MBII device is good, but a neighbor has the new one that kicked a more detailed code out for me. Still P0365 but this one says Right Exhaust Camshaft Hall Sensor No Signal. We pulled both of the sensors identified in the pic and cleaned them up just to make sure and CEL comes right back on. Although the new code points directly to the exhaust one, might just replace both.

EDIT: I know check the part number...but are they technically the same part??

I have never read of oil getting into or to the hall sensors - but, could be plausible if oil has made it to the ME from the cam
magnets - that the Achille’s heel for oil leaking into the the harness as I understand it.

Please confirm you have oil in the hall sensors, if that is in fact the case.

I don’t have part numbers available at this time, but seems very likely they (cam shaft position sensors) are the same part number as they’re just using the Hall effect to monitor cam rotation. They wouldn’t care what cam...

Exhaust camshaft position sensor A0041536928
Intake camshaft position sensor A2729050043

Both approx $160 each on mercedesbenzstarparts.com There may be cheaper sources.

Items 60 and 110 in the diagram.

Is was very little oil on the inner edge of the plug. Nothing, in my mind, to be overly concerned about. Verified there was no oil into the plug.

Ordered two new sensors from FCP Euro for $60 a piece. Should get them by Friday!

Got the parts from FCP Euro yesterday. Took all of about 10 minutes to swap out the exhaust side sensor and that is because I only had one cup of coffee. Started up, cleared codes. Restarted and no CEL. Seems like I am in business!!
