C180/CL203/M111 Fuel pressure regulator leak

I finally realised, the issue is actually the metal retaining frame of the fuel distributor, that the regulator sits in. There are slots in the frame that a metal clamp passes through. Over time, the metal clamp pushes against the frame and pushes it out buckling the thin metal of the fuel distributor frame. I used some pliers to press the frame down against the clamp, and this finally stopped the fuel from leaking! Hope this helps others..
hopefully this helps explain the issue. Metal fatigue over time allows the fuel pressure regulator to start leaking. A pair of pliers were used to clamp the frame down and stop the leak.

Did the leak just suddenly occur one day? Can't say I've ever heard of anyone else having this problem. Maybe you got a defective rail assembly by luck. In your situation I'd be worried that the metal buckles again. Might be better to replace the rail with one from a wrecker.

I eventually traced it to dripping off the bottom of the regulator.
I think its a symptom of the age of the car, the metal used is fairly weak, it was easy to use pliers/ multi-grips to crimp the thin frame back in position.
Suspect the vibration and pulsing over 20 years allowed the gap to open up just enough for a tiny amount of petrol to seep out.. I will keep an eye on it, and maybe pick up a replacement rail assembly when i am at the wreckers again..
