2005 C240 4Matic Gear Oil & Transfer Case Oil
I’m a proud new owner of a 2005 C240 4Matic and looking to do some maintenance. I’ve read some older threads on what gear oil to use for the differentials and the transfer case. The MB transfer case oil I’m going to get from the dealer or online, but I’m wondering if it is necessary to get the MB gear oil or if there is an equivalent that meets or exceeds the 235.7 spec in the 2005 owners manual. The newest thread I could see was from 2011. I’m sure there’s a newer one I couldn’t find, but what gear oil would you guys recommend for the front and rear diff?

Anyone? Looking through the owners manuals the gear oil listed is 85w-90 part number 001989170310. FCP Euro and other sites show it’s been discontinued and the superseded part number is a lower weight oil. That doesn’t sound good to me. The transfer case oil listed in the owners manuals is part number 001989230311. That also shows no longer available and is superseded by 001989230310. Same stuff I guess? Where the gear oil for the front and rear diff is no longer available in the heavier weight what are you folks using?
