What's the black thing on the windshield?

There is a big black lump on the inside of the windshield, behind the rear-view mirror. It has a couple of windows on the glass side, open to the front of the car.

What is this thing?

Loving' my car. 351 km.

I think you're talking about the rain sensor. The small "window" is where it detects the amount of raindrops on the glass.

I think the sensor for the automatic headlights is in there, too.

Any way to slow the Automatic Wipers?

Ok, I have the rain sensor too. And, Well... I wish i didn't now! I think it wipes way to frequently. Is there any way to change the sensitivity?

You could turn it off, then push in the stalk every time that you want to wipe the windshield.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why you'd want to have a windshield with rain on it? I actually think that it's too slow usually.

Not sure about that. If you look at the "vent" or "cowl" inset into the hood (where the windshield washers are located), you'll notice a small black dome in the center. I've always thought this was the headlight sensor, but not 100% sure.

The black marble on the cowl is for the climate control sun sensor.

The top-center windshield stuff is the headlight (and also instrument light) sun sensor and the rain sensor.

Do a search in the forums on the adjusting-rain-wiper-interval thing - I think it is adjustable by the dealer.

Keep your windshield clean. Dirt on it can mess up the functionality of the rain sensor, making it go crazy...

i think that the speed of the wiper when using the rain sensor is a little bit too fast

just hate the look when the wipers are fast...it is actually quite distracting.

What's the little sensor of the back of the rear view mirror (the side facing the windshield)? It looks like a photocell.

thanks
Jim

That is the sensor for the autodimming rear view mirrors.

Are you sure? I'm not talking about the one that is on the mirror side of the mirror unit that you can see while seated in the car. The sensor I am referring to can only be seen from looking at the back of the mirror unit, from the front of the car.

Jim, I misunerstood which sensor you meant. After just going out to look at the car, I believe that the the sensor on the back of the mirror is for the automatic headlights. The "eye" in the black housing that I thought was for the headlights, I now think is the infrared transmitter for the garage door opener.

Hmm? Don't garage doors use RF transmitters? You'd need a line-of-site arrangement for infrared, like your TV at home. I know my stock handheld garage door opener doesn't have any visible sensors/emitters on its casing.

The depression on the back of the mirror housing is the sensor for the dimming feature. There is also a unsilvered spot on the front of the mirror in the upper right that is for the headlights of the car behind you to be sensed by a CDS type cell. If the front sensor thinks its dark out and light hits the mirror it will dim the mirrors progressively with increase light differential between the front and back side of the mirror. Try it by putting your finger over the sensor on the back side of your mirror without blocking the front sensor during the day and the mirror will dim in about 5 seconds.

That's exactly right. Two sensors are required for the dimming mirror to compare what's coming toward the car and what's behind it. You can cover the rear one in daytime and the mirror will darken since it thinks the front sensor sees bright headlights. Cover the front one at night and the mirror will lighten... This also controls the driver dimming side mirror.

Minor rant...

I really wish the automatic wipers would check if the drivers side door is open before kicking on. A couple times in the winter I turned the car on with snow on the windshield and was thanked with a pile of snow on my left leg and the inside of the door. I've since learned by lesson, but it would be nice if the logic was there to check that.
