C320 trunk opening

My trunk only opens to the resistance point instead of opening fully. I have
to remember to push it up the rest of the way and sincei it doesn't open all the
way, I have bumped my head several times.
My dealer says they all are like this and I should quit complaining. My car is
a 2002 model and I had a 2001 before that the trunk popped right up to the
full position every time.
Am I wrong? Do some of you have trunks that open fully every time?
In Europe they have emergency triangles in the trunk lids and they open
fully. This is the only annoyance I have with this great car and would
like to get it corrected if mine is defective.
I will really appreciate any help since my dealer has written me off on this.

correct me if i'm wrong everyone.. but isnt' there some spring that you can adjust in the trunk that will help with this problem... or is that on another car.... i swear there was a way to change the tension in the springs....

My springs were replaced by the dealer and they are set at the
strongest position but they still won't fully open the trunk.

It is my understanding that the trunk lid should open fully. Mine does stick on occasion - usually after I wash the car or if it unusually hot where the molding sticks to the frame. Otherwise, it opens fully most of the time. I would keep complaining to the dealer about getting it fixed, unless you are okay with the situation.

My trunk opens fully when opened. Tell that dealer to stop making excuses and fix it the way is should be. Ask a sales guy for a couple of keys to some other C's and show the service guy the way they "all" work!

MarkL is correct. Mine also opens fully without a problem. If they have replaced the springs already, then I wonder what the problem could be? Perhaps the truck and lid are not aligned properly? What ever the problem, this is a brand new car, and the dealer should fix it.

I agree with MarkL and revstriker - my trunk POPS open, all the way. In fact I make sure I'm clear or I'll get hit!

If your trunk lid doesn't open all the way, they need to fix it.

I have the 2002 C320 and my trunk open fully without any problem using either remote or the trunk open buttom inside the car. If your trunk isn't then get the dealer to fix it.

2004 C320 pewter/charcoal
I have started noticing that on my car (2004 C320) that the trunk will open fully the majority of times, however sometimes the trunk lid will only barely open and I have to lift it the remainder of the way (especially if it's raining). I took it to the dealer and I think he said they lubricated it but it still does it. Are replacing springs the only fix then?

the spring tension is adjustable. mine stopped opening all the way a while back and i took it in and it only took a few minutes to get it working properly again.

I took my car in a few wks ago and mentioned that there was a spring that needed to have increased tension put on it (b/c the trunk is not opening properly).

The service guy said the older models had a spring that could be adjusted, but the newer models (mine is 2004), did not have an accessible spring. They basically lubed up the trunk hinges (again) and said that was it.

Problem still happens. Any further suggestions? Or is this tech wrong and there should be something that could be adjusted?

THanks

I'm taking my car in this Monday for B service. Would appreciate it if anyone could advise on the trunk thing, whether the tech was right in saying you can't adjust the spring on the newer models.

Thanks

Mine stopped opening fully once I had mounted the licence plate and the rear Escort Shifter sensor. If the cars parked on a slight uphill incline then it opens. I got an 02 C32, BTW. I was also hoping it was merely the case of adjusting the springs.

Thanks
your tech/advisor is full of ****.

my 2004.5 popped open like it SHOULD. it did, however, wear out and not open fully after a while. they had to "readjust" the springs, and that corrected the problem.

Has anyone done this readjusting of the springs by themselves yet? I need a project for this weekend.

i just had mine in for it's first inspection and i was having the same problem. The SA said no problem and had the tech fix it. So all of the people dealing with dealers that are saying there is nothing that can be done, they are full of **** and don't want to fix it. Mine was fixed under warrenty and so should yours. It is supposed to open fully on it's own which is why you can adjust the tension. If my SA told me to quit complaining I'd rip his damn head off, file a complaint since it is he that needs my business and not the other way around, and then I'd take it elsewhere.

I adjusted my 2005 myself, you have to remove the trunk liner on both the driver and pas. side. You will see 2 big springs that have 3 position holes that they can be in. I moved mine to the farthest hole and now it opens great :-)

Thanks for the advice (couldn't find the thumbs-up smiley so this one seemed appropriate).

Did you need any tools to adjust the springs? Were they easy to adjust?

This actually helped me for when I added the C55 rear spoiler I could no longer get the trunk to open fully when I remotely opened it due to the added weight of the spoiler. Now after moving the spring to the farthest hole it now opens normally again. No special tools needed but be careful when you remove the spring on the right side - it will release all the tension and will cause the trunk lid to come down and possibly hit your head. The left spring apparently does not do much. Good luck.
