Engine swap vs transmission compatibility

Hey folks,

Still new AF in the world of MB so that's why I ask questions like this

I have a 2002 C320 Elegance and I want to do an engine swap for one of the M113's. Do you guys know if the transmission that comes with the C320 can line up with any/all of the M113 engines. If there are only specific ones, which ones do you know of that will work with it?

Thanks!

A 722.6 5 speed auto. Probably from the same donor car that you get the M113 engine from. That's what's used in the C32 and C55, but also most if not all M113 powered cars. I've heard that the ignition key switch, ECU and TCU are all VIN locked, so I'd get all of those parts.

Okay cool. Thanks for helping to answer my question. Have a good one

TCU on 5 speed is not VIN locked. You can buy one on ebay and replace it if it fails,
plug and play. Which happens if oil wicks up the wire loom from bad orings on
tranny connector. I've picked a few TCU's and sold them no issues.
Part number needs to be the same.
SOMEWWHERE on here on the net was a list
of TCU part numbers and the gear ratio's of diffs they were for, but
I've looked and never able to find it again.
Ignition key switch, ECU, and dash panel are VIN locked.
Replacing dash panel without downloading data from old and one to new one results in 999999
on odo.
As far as mechanical fit, I don't know.

Just a word of warning about these gearboxes!

The C320 gearbox is NOT directly compatible with an M113 engine

Yes it will work, but you might run into one of the following issues.
1. The V8 engines use a slightly different mechanical variation of the 722.6, just in order to handle the higher torque
2. The TCM is coded to the M113 to use a different pressure map when changing gears (Prevents slippage)

Not saying the car won't work with an engine swap, just saying there might be a couple oddities you notice

Source: I work on reverse engineering these gearboxes

If you want to use your stock gearbox, I suggest you check the series I am working on making a totally custom TCM designed for the W203/W204 series of vehicles. I do plan to eventually sell these once I get round to sourcing more parts! (Thanks silicon shortage of 2021)
