Cool Computer Modifications Upon Delivery

Hi all of you grizzled veterans out there!

I am taking delivery of an "02 C230K next week and want to know what modifications you have told your dealer to make on the Computer - ie, performance changes, window changes, stereo changes, security changes, lock/unlock changes, or anything else you know about.

Don't know exactly what is needed or desired, so need your help so that these things are done before delivery.

TIA

the most common one i see is the change to the radio so that it doesn't automatically increase when the speed/windows are open...

I got the Norway settings done. It's really nice to have the audible confirmation of the lock/unlock as well as the lights, for us **** people (you know who you are).

Since this is an automotive forum by Lakers, you must mean lakes pipes. Well, I think side mounted exhaust pipes probably are not the way to go on a Mercedes. :p They look real cool on my AMX, though.

Best ever side pipes - the last of the V8 interceptors!

I just did the 93-octane fuel change. Not sure if it makes a performancce difference. But I'm very good at lying to myself, so I think it does.

Alright, I'm going to ask a dumb question. If you have the Bose system; I presume you set a desired audio volume prior to starting your drive. If you have the windows open and there is ambient noise (wind, traffic, whatever....), why wouldn't someone want the volume to automatically compensate for the increased noise interference? This question is for anyone, not just greg230.

I actually think what people don't like about the system is not the volume increase - which seems gradual and rather subtle - but the sudden decrease in volume when coming to a stop. If it were as subtle decreasing the volume it wouldn't be as noticable and people probably wouldn't deactivate the feature.

I may be wrong but I think the chirp (Norway) feature will work ONLY on those cars that have the alarm system. Cars sold in Canada do not have the alarm system as standard equipment so I think this is not a universal change that will work. If you have different information please post.

Wouldn't the volume go back to it's original level to which it was initially set prior to taking off in the car or does it go lower?

On the bose, my volume does not change at all, is there a setting to change it. Like to control the volume myself, notice a lot of people do not like the change.

It goes back to the same setting - but after driving and it gets louder the change back to the original setting is very noticable. Similar to the phenomenon where you get into the car start it up and are surprised at how loud you were lisitening to the radio the last time you were in it - the ear just gets accustomed to the loudness.

the norway setting requires an alarm system. also, it has the side effect of losing the panic function on the key. up to you to make the trade off.

the fuel settings, i am convinced, do not do what it implies - use 93 US octane fuel more efficiently. see this thread on fuel settings discussion . if you search for similar threads, you will find more info on it. i had it turned back to default. btw, there are 2 settings. one for fuel octane and another for the stage 1/2/3. the latter may have some benefit for those interested in pulley upgrades.

the speed sensitive volume adjustment was too abrupt for me, up and down. so i had it turned off. the bose audiopilot noise compensation seems to be more subtle, but i can discern the volume changes. YMMV. i have no idea how to turn that off.

of course, if your technician doesn't know where some of these settings are, feel free to take the instructions from flashman's faq with you. i did.

Everyone on this forum has their own opinions on the "need" for this mod or that. The range in opinions is amazing. It shows how clearly everyone's preferences vary all over the map. One person's preference for jacking with the audiopilot may not be your preference.

My suggestion... Take a deep breath, take delivery of the car, and enjoy driving it Bone Stock for at least a month. Only you can decide what mod is needed, or desired. You won't be able to decide on either until you live with a stock vehicle that will establish a baseline for YOUR opinions. Think of it this way. If you make a change before delivery, you won't be able to honestly say whether its for the better or not (for you), because you have not witnessed the stock setup firsthand.

They really are wonderful cars, just the way they come from the factory. I'd give it a chance to impress you. You can always request changes later. Either way, only you can decide what's right for you... no one on this forum can make these determinations for you.

Just a plea for sanity...

Question they don't know anything about these changes

I asked my dealer about changing to the"chirp" sound lock and the speed sensitive volume setting, but he said he knows nothing about them. He also said he asked the technician who knows nothing about it also. He suggested me bring in the instructions......

what should I do? do y guys have instructions for the audio setting? I found the one for the "chirp" sound on FAQ.
thanx

tell him to RTFM

My technician did some reading. Tell him to do that and print out the FAQ.

Just took delivery and this is what I had done on my USA car:

1. Ignition Adaptive Setting from Standard to 93 (If done in English, 93 is 93) Talked with Kleemann about this and if you only use US Super Unleaded, he suggested this setting to get a few more HP (I'll be getting his ring pulley kit soon after the break in period)

2. Audio Speed Sensitive Setting to 3dBs - works fine at this setting

3. Did not do Norway Setting - Tech thought it might interfere with other US settings. Anyway, I think seeing the lights blink is enough.

Putting on clear bra on entire front end Friday. Will follow with pics next week.

Some dealers don't know about it and some won't do it, but it has to be done by a dealer.
