I was laid up a couple of weeks, and finally back at this. Dropped the pan and can't get the timing cover off for anything. I can pry and the bottom and get it to move some, but the top doesn't respond to anything; almost like there are bolts coming into the cover from the top (which I don't think there are). It may just be the level of glue used by the PO. Not sure where to go with it now, as no amount of large rubber mallet banging, prybar judicously used, or screwdrivers wedged in seems to matter. As I'm at the "nothing left to lose" point, I may just get the big crowbar out and lean on it until something breaks or gives.

There's 2 bolts on top right below the cam actuator sprockets on each side. One of them can be removed without removing the sprocket the other i guess with maybe some swivels you maybe able to reach it depending on what you are doing to the car it maybe easier to just remove the cam shaft and sprocket all in one piece if the chain tensioner is off you should be able to slide the chain off.

The irony here is that you need the thermostat /upper cover off to access those bolts, but you have to hold the engine up with a support bar connected to that cover. You can’t do much from below because the pan is off to reach the lower bolts.
Thank you for the answer. This engine could have been fine with a belt, instead MB designed something absolutely the worst I’ve ever seen with regards to maintenance/repair ability. Car is going to the junkyard.

oh no don't junk yet!

I removed the bolts up top first before I lifted and just put the cover back on to lift the engine out sorry I didn't detail that on my post... If you're going to junk it part it out i'll probably get a few things from you....
