Crashhh, booom aaagh

My girlfriend hit a chunk of metal that flew off of a car carrier on her way to work yesterday. Gouged the lower right bumper cover, knocked the foglight loose and chewed up the undercarriage lower inner fender cover. Here's the question, There is a loose wire with a small pointy appendage on it. Any idea where it goes? It originates in the vicinity of the right fog light. The gouge can be repaired and the inner fender cover is easily replaced, the fogs still work but where does and what is that mystery piece? Some kind of sensor? The car is a 2002 C230K Sports Coupe.

Thanks,

did it fly OFF the car carrier or did the carrier throw it up from the road. If it flew off the carrier, there insurance should pay for repairs.
I have no idea about wire
PS I am a insurance agent.

The wire with appendage is probably the thermocouple used for the temperature sensor. The light sensor for headlights is on the opposite (drivers) side.

Sounds like your exterior temp sensor. It (on my C240 sedan) mounts in the black plastic that surrounds the fog light.

ah yes, that would be in an ideal world, however, my girlfriend stopped to see what was damaged and of course the truck had no idea that it was shedding parts like Haleys Comet and kept going. No idea who owned the truck.

Does it push into the round hole next to the foglight and stick out from the housing a bit? That was a likely looking spot, but I didn't want to jam it in and find out it belongs somewhere else.

Yes. It sticks out about 1 cm. For a while, mine kept falling back into the headlight area inside the engine bay. It then would read about 134' F until I stuck it back in its place. I had MB service fix it officially at my A service.

Thanks,
That's the info I needed. Hope I can get some of this repaired tonight (or at least put somewhat back together).

Yes, it is the temp sensor. Similar situation happened to me, piece of metal in freeway flew up from a truck tire running over it and it hit my bumper while I was going 70 mph. Cracked the bumper, put a hole in the cover under the engine, took out the a/c condensor & radiator. Total repair bill was over $2,400.
