How do you remove the latch from the underside of the hood?

The latch on the passenger side of my hood has become corroded. I think the problem started when my coolant take burst and soaked the underside of the hood. I also had an issue with the secondary water pump and that may have contributed to the problem.

I found a nice replacement at the pick and pull on Saturday.

The center part with the spring and rubber pad was missing from the donor car and I thought I could reuse those parts from my car. I was able to remove the part from the donor car by unfastening the two bolts holding it in place.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to remove the part on my car, the part stayed in place after I removed the two bolts. I didn't want to use force or break it in some other way, so I reinstalled the two bolts.

Does anyone know how to remove the center portion with the spring and pad without damage? The parts I need to remove are shown in the next picture.

The black rubber pad is easily removed, but I can't figure out how to remove the spring and the rest of the structue.

Thanks in advance for assistance.

A quick search online shows the spring assembly goes into the notched hole and is held in place with a metal clip.

If I were to guess, it's probably just jammed in there. I'd wiggle out the entire thing after removing the 2 bolts. Some plastic pry tools may help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm visiting the "Pick and Pull" this morning to continue gathering parts for my Bi-Xenon auto levelling project. I'll take a look at the latches on some of the cars while I'm there.

Remove the rubber pad.

It just peels off.

Press the two legs of the plastic part together.

With the legs pressed together you can twist the plastic part out of the mount.

Then you can can remove the metal mount by unfastening the two bolts. There is a plastic piece that fits between the metal bracket and the underside of the hood. Note how it is positioned so that you can reinstall it the same way as you found it.

I removed a few of the latches from cars at the “Pick and Pull.” When I removed the bolts from the parts cars, the latches just dropped off. When I attempted to remove the latch on my car for replacement, it was stuck in place. I am wondering whether it corroded underneath and is held on by rust. I’m reluctant to smack it with a hammer. As one of my friends said, “If you are using a lot of force, you are probably doing it wrong.”

I will take a second look at it tomorrow when I have time.
