Almost stranded!

Car wouldn't start, it just turned over until it timed out. Tried my backup key and same problem. Called MB roadside assistance and they suggested this sequence....lock and unlock car using key, wipe sensor end of key on cloth, insert and let it sit for 30 seconds, then try it....it worked! While I was talking to them I stuck my finger in the ignition slot and wiped the window in there with my finger. I think that fixed it (otherwise the backup key would have worked). I guess it doesn't take much to disrupt the codes being read from the key by the system.

Follow up....

Same symptom happened again, then the car died twice with all dashboard lights going on. MB replaced the cranshaft position sensor. They also replaced the fuel pump and level sensors under a tech bulletin update. Why would the cranshaft sensor go out? I've read where this is a pretty common occurence. Where is it located?

Can you post the TSB number? What range of MY does it cover? Thanx.

Did roadside have to come or that trick you did last time help you again?

The trick with the key didn't help this time. Just kept trying to start it and eventually it caught. When it died the engine started first try but immediately died again. Then after several tries it started. I can't find any reference to the TSB number on the invoice. At the end of the description section it says "...replace fuel pump and left level sensor due to wiring update". I'm assuming this means a TSB. Any info on the cranshaft position sensor? I'm curious, and maybe it's something that gets oil fouled or can be cleaned?
