After 225k miles, the honeycomb in the passenger side front CAT broke free. I was able to order a rebuilt set, both left and right side, for $900 including a $400 core charge from my local dealer. Are there any tips or tricks on how to remove and replace this?
also, can this be done on Jack stands or so I need a lift?
Spray down all the nuts and bolts ahead of time with a good penetrating oil. Should be able to spray the bolts at the cats from in the engine bay, then reach under and spray the nuts and bolts in the middle of the car. Let it sit over night. I have to work on my W204 exhaust and replace one of the manifolds and I have been spraying the nuts and bolts at night just getting them ready.
I would buy all new hardware. All mine is severely rusted. I was able to find a pair of used base plate brackets on ebay in very good condition for 1/3rd what the dealer wants. I also bought a manifold for $20 and it cleaned up great.

I found a garage on the west side of town that rents lifts for 30 bucks an hour and I was able to take the old one out and install the new one with the help of a friend and just over two hours. All in all, it was rather easy. The local shops were quoting me 3.2 hours worth of work. They must go slow.
