To remove the tailgate, do I find the electrical connectors inside the left and right rubber boots that are visible when the tailgate is raised or do I find them under the internal trim just inside the back?

I'm sure if you search you will find it. I do believe all the wires run through the 'snorkel' rubber
piece. Put a new one in while you're at it.
And yes you have to drop the headliner a bit to do this. Like I said. Search

3 years later I broke the rear window and stationary sunroof on a low flying roof with
bicycles on the roof. Oh what fun. Fixed that too. Got lucky and found a guy who could fix it,he just happened to have the rear glass,
and got the sunroof glass off ebay.
