Command CD - D Navi vs. C Navi

Two questions,

1) Does my '02 C320 use C Navi or D Navi command CD's? I'm trying to sell my old 2001 CD's and folks are asking me which type they are.

2) I bought the latest 2004 set from Mercedes. I'd like to make a backup of these CD's for fear of losing them or having them melt in my car, etc. Is there any way around the 2004 copyright protection? I had no problem backing up my 2001 cd's, but the 2004 cd's are proving tricky.

If you're copying them on a computer, try Nero, usually works pretty good. Also try CloneCD, which is probably the best option.

I made backups of my 2004 cd's using Alcohol120. http://www.alcohol-soft.com/

It costs about $56 us but they have a free 30 day trial so you can make sure it works for you before purchasing.

My originals are up on the shelf. (don't want to risk loss or damage)

You can back them up but they may not work well. They will most likely cause non-fatal internal errors when you use them. I was doing the same thing (same car, same NAV unit) and they, MB, noticed read errors when hooked up to the diagnose computer and asked me about it. They showed me how the CD-R's don't work well in the head unit, but ok in the CD changer. I put a CD-R audio disc in the head unit and listened. It sounded like crap. No wonder the CD-R NAV disk had some issues... (And yes, I used high quality CD's.)

Some COMAND units play CD-R's ok and some don't. I guess it has a lot to do with the strength of the laser in the COMAND unit itself and the age.

In my 2003 COMAND the CD-R's work ok. In my freinds C32 they produce errors randomly as stated.

As Shorthair has said, your mileage may vary.

Try recording the CD-R at a slower speed (e.g. 16x, 8x, etc.). Some CD drives have difficulty reading media written at high speeds.

I am finally getting around to trying this. I'm getting tons of read errors from Alcohol though - are there any tricks to this?
