Month-end MB Dealer Tactics?
Here's my entertaining dealer story...
Purchased the car on April 30th with downpayment. 2 days later, dealer found "exact" car we wanted in LA (5 hours away from us in the bay area) and we would have car in 1 week. In anticipation of taking delivery Saturday, we end up selling our other car the day before. We arrived at dealer Saturday, only to see a car with the WRONG interior color, and a persistent dealer indicating this potentially to be our problem. so now we're facing 6 weeks with no car...
now the six weeks are up, and the new car is in transit from LA to SF. AND OUR DEALER HAS THE NERVE to ask us to come in "early" (AKA before month-end) to do all of the paperwork. Really vague, but insistent that we finalize everything on Saturday, despite the fact that we have no confirmation as to when the car will arrive from LA and be prepped.
What it comes down to is that this guy wants us to come to the dealer, sign everything, pay for a car we're not driving away with, all by "month end" -- just so it is in their stats and numbers to help out their allotment for next month.
Needless to say, I was rather surprised that they would dream of asking their customers to sign for a car that they weren't getting (although they promised to deliver it to us next week
). And insulted that they think us naive enough to fall for it.

I agree with Wyatt. Especially after what you've already gone through with them! What if something else on the car is different than what you requested? You would have greater leverage with them if the sale had not yet been "made".

Yes,
I think this was the sales guy being jerky, I would mention something to his boss. This is unprofessional. If I was his boss, I would want to know my employee was out of line.
I know there are some sales guys on this board, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the sale only counts on the dealership monthly total if the customer takes delivery. However, it does count on the sales guy's total if the cash is paid, but delievery does not occur.
In any case, the best word to describe his behavior is tacky.

The plot thickens
The sales guy called again today....he still has no official date on the delivery, but thinks it will arrive some time next week.
If I come in and "finalize the paperwork" for the car this Saturday, he will take an additional $500 off the price and throw in the Command CD's.
It's tempting, but I am still worried about what kind of recourse I would have if something is wrong w/ the car when I take delivery.

I agree with the others. The dealer should be working for you... as it is now, seems like the dealer wants you to work for them. Not good. You definitely want to see the car before you plop down your money. Even a Mercedes. If you pay upfront, you lose any sense of control... and you'll have to beg to get your deposit back, and these dealers love to see customers beg and drool.
I know you're without a car, and it's difficult not to be in a hurry, but these dealers wait/pray for customers in a hurry... It's a signal for them to steal, IMO.
Sorry about the mess-up. We're thinking positive thoughts for you. Let us know what transpires.

Play his own game. Agree to show up on Saturday but don't say anything specific about the deal, and then pressure him for more discounts/freebies to make you feel confortable. He'll have the pressure of of not meeting his hidden agenda at the last minute. If he doesn't give in, simply walk away.
Just my opinion, if you're willing to get nasty and walk away.

I waited till the last day of the month to buy mine and got a hell of a deal. In my opinion, its the best way to get a car. The salespeople ALWAYS want to push them out at months end and will most likely offer great incentives and discounts if you play it right. It takes a combination of good research, hardballing and a little luck to get a great deal on a car, but its very possible if you put the time into it.

Don't know if this will help but MB of Laguna Niguel had at least 15 new 2002 C-Coupes out front and probably as many in the back. They were selling them for $2,500 off this week and maybe you can even do better than that.
