Remote Key

Would there be a way to open the driver door if you did not have the key remote? Say your remote battery died. How would you do it or can it be done? I have a 2001 c240.

You use the small metal key which fits inside the remote key itself. Have you looked at your key? There's a release tab at the top which allows you to pull out the small key (which serves as the key ring attachment point also). This key fits in the front door lock, but it will not disable the alarm and you cannot start the car with it. I believe you can plug the "dead" remote key into the ignition to stop the alarm (I don't think the battery is needed for that function - there's a coil or something inside the key).

All but the last 8 words are correct, MarkL (how you doing, dude?). The coil in the ignition switch senses the presence of the key placed in the slot. The batteries in the Smart Key only power the transmitter and key memory (if equipped). The key will work in the ignition even if the batteries are removed.

Not a stupid question at all. The topic has been brought up several times before, so you're not alone. It's all good.

It was not a dumb question. I am sure many of us learned from this post.

Hey, at least you got a response other than the standard "STFF" we see to often!!

On some cars, if the battery dies in the CAR the drivers window opens.
