Non-Export Agreement

When we picked up our C 230 K on Wednesday, one of the papers we had to sign was a non-export agreement.

Basically we had to agree to pay the dealer (who presumably in turn would pay MB Canada) $7546 CDN ($4900 US) if we sell the car for export within one year of the date of sale.

This was funny to see this form - we got some good laughs out of it - and we had absolutely no problem signing it. This one's a keeper.

The $4900 US figure is ... more or less the difference in price between this model in Canada (optioned as ours was) and the same vehicle in the US market.

I wonder if M-B Canada and the dealers really try to enforce these agreements - surely it'd be hard to tell if a particular vehicle's been exported.

I think all Canadian dealers are asking for this. Most paperwork simply gives the dealer right of first refusal if you want to sell it south of the border. And it is extremely easy for another MB dealer to tell where the car came from. It is in their computer system.

All North American dealers are supposed to be having their customers sign these agreements. I had to sign one.

I had to sign one also. What if my car gets stolen and it's driven into Mexico? Do I have to pay them? LOL

I doubt that would be enforceable in the US.
MB probably just does it so that if the cars get exported by the buyer, MB can say they did what they could to try to prevent it.

Surely it'd break down en route, no?

Actually, that's probably a faster and easier way than going through the Lemon Law legal process!
