2002 C230 Kompressor Coupe with hood star

I searched this forum for hood star info, and though I didn't turn up a lot, I found a few comments suggesting this is possible. What I'm wondering is exactly what needs to be done in order to replace the hood emblem badge with a hood star -- I know some have suggested this probably isn't the best idea in terms of risk of getting the emblem stolen, but that's not a big deal -- they're fairly inexpensive to replace anyhow. And I have seen other MBs (actually saw an S-Class today) with the grille star and the hood star. I have to admit, it actually looked very cool.

In terms of getting a hood star on a C230K Coupe, what exactly is necessary? I haven't really inspected the hood yet, but I talked to the dealership today and they said in order to get a hood star in on the coupe, a hole would have to be drilled. Is this accurate, or can the badge simply be removed and a hood star put in it's place?

Thanks

It looks pretty damn lame on a car that already has the star in the grille

See, I didn't want a discussion of the fashionability of putting a hood star on. When I made this post, I wanted information on how it'd be done. I appreciate your taste, but honestly like demon and PsssTkiD said, it's my car. This is something I'm interested in doing and I don't care if you think it looks lame. But while on the topic, I do prefer the hood star over the grille star.

Although I do not think it will look good (a coupe with a estate star???), it is really so simple you should be able to pop your hood and figure it out.

As you are going this route, may I recommend that you contact user "Mark Cummins" and get yourself a black CF starless or painted black starless grill to better compliment the standup hood star?

If he doesn't have a hood star in hand, I don't think he can just figure it out by looking at the hood.

Orcberg, you can remove the flat badge and take a couple of pics of the hole from above and below the hood and post them here (place a small ruler next to the hole in the pic). People with sedan's that have replaced their hood ornament w/ a flat badge should be able to tell you if your car's hood hole looks them same as their's.

I'll be picking up my new C230K sedan this weekend from the dealer. I have already ordered a "sport grille" and flat badge, so I'll be selling my brand new hood ornament for $20/shipped.

You need to punch a 1.25 inch diameter hole beneath where the flat hood badge of the Coupe.

The stand up Star is $14.95 at my dealer, but cost $7 to ship to me.

I agree, the Coupe would look good with a painted starless grill and the stand up Star. I have had my extra Star since I bought the car, just never got arround to installing the stand up Star.

Hey, there are people who like the aluminum interior look. Me, I hate it. To me, a Mercedes has wood interior and a Star on the hood! Just my tastes.

orcberg, just do it. Then post a photo. There will be some flamers, but most will be glad to see an alternative.

People didn't like the 2005 rear taillights, didn't like the 2005 grill, didn't like the AMG brakes on and on. Do what you like.

I remember my old C240 had more than just a hole where the hood ornament mounts. There was a recessed area around the hole, and there were two symetrical cut-out areas on either side of the hole where the hood ornament slotted through and twisted/locked down. Does the hatchback have the same recessed area that the sedan has under the hood ornament?

Yeah, its your car. But freedom of speech and opinion are what they are. You bring it up, we'll comment on it as well as give advice. Simple.

I'll have to check when I get home (I'm out of town for work right now). I'll take some pics and post them.

It is intresting that you would suggest to do this considering that most people want to change their bonnet star for a flat emblem but because there are only two holes holding on the flat emblem and neither are centered to the emblem you will have to drill a hole because about 1.5 inches of the bonnet star goes into the car where the spring goes so it can sway with a impact, it is then all bolted on. MAKE SURE YOUR HOLE IS CENTERED. measure twice drill once.
