don't let them charge for synthetic!
I work at a MB dealership.
Your car came with synthetic and that is what it should get.
There should not be a charge for your oil change! Did you have it done at the scheduled interval indicated by your FSS readout on the dash? If you have the oil changed before the FSS indicator comes on you will be charged, otherwise you should get the oil (synthetic) for free.

Car is a few thousand shy of first service, so it hasn't gone in yet for the free oil change. My MB dealer sent a brochure which advertized the Flex A service and there was a note that synthetic oil is extra. I'll challenge that ( of course )

Maybe this will clear things up.
I spoke to one of our service advisors. Any 2000 and later model came with synthetic and will be changed wiht synthetic (at prescribed intervals) for free. The Flexible service system started in 1998 however, in 98 and 99 the cars came with dinasour (sp?) oil. If you want to go to synthetic oil in your 98 or 99 car you can "upgrade " to synthetic and pay the difference. Reread that notice from your dealer, hopefully it is referring to a charge for synthetic in a 98/99 car. Under no circumstances should you be charged for synthetic in a 2002.

CME4BENZ, do you know if there is anything in writing that one could refer to when working with the service reps. This way, if there is a problem, someone could say "Check Bulletin XYZ" or perhaps something could be printed form the internet. Thanks, again!

Bulletin #86 (I think), dated 2/23/01... Applying to all cars
MBNET MSG. #
ROUTE=ALL
TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
ATTENTION: ALL SERVICE MANAGERS
ALL SHOP FOREMEN
ALL SERVICE ADVISORS
ALL WARRANTY ADMINISTRATORS
ALL TIMEKEEPERS AND BOOKERS
SUBJECT: Flexible Service System Changes: Synthetic Oil and A Service Operation Times
MBUSA maintenance requirements have been changed to reflect the recommendation that only MB approved synthetic motor oil should be used in those Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the Flexible Service System.
Letters advising affected customers of this change are tentatively scheduled to be mailed in mid to late March, however all Dealers are advised that they can implement this transition to synthetic oil effective immediately.
To clarify: Dealers are requested to begin this transition to synthetic oil for their customers who seek scheduled maintenance for their FSS-equipped vehicle prior to receiving a notification letter from MBUSA. Dealers should further advise these customers that they will still receive a letter from MBUSA explaining this change even though their transition to synthetic oil would have already occurred with their current service visit. The drafts of customer letters that were included in the original January 12, 2001 correspondence to all Dealers can be used when counseling customers.
In those instances where the vehicle is covered by the Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Commitment, Dealers will be reimbursed a maximum of $5.50 per quart for synthetic oil.
In addition to this change in Mercedes-Benz Maintenance requirements, labor times for the FSS A Service will be adjusted due to elimination of the dust filter replacement and seatbelt inspection.

Mark,
I don't know of anything printed that would paraphrase the FSS for different years. It is standard procedure and should not be an issue at any dealership. Your owners book does have a section on the flexible service and the "maintenance committment". Page 7 of the "service and warranty information" booklet refers to the free maintenance intervals. The booklet on "recommend products" specifies the various brands of approved oil ( all synthetics ).

OT: i don't know what kind of non-disclosure agreements you've signed with MB, but a website containing all of those bulletins would be an excellent resource. i'd love to organize something like that.
