Question climate-controlled compartment?

I just got a 2002 C320, both the brochure and manual mentioned that the center console compartment is climate-controlled. But my car don't have the on/off lever and air outlet as mentioned. Instead I have a fan unit for the rear ventilation installed inside. Is it only my car or just everyone get the same thing? so that's mean MBUSA is lying or what?

hmm, don't know about your C320

but my Coupe has it. If you look into the bottom center compartment, on the left hand side (nearest the driver) there should be a black lever which you can adjust back and forth to let air into the compartment. There is no writing on the lever. See if you can find it.

The fan to blow air to the back was a change during the 2002 production of the sedans. My '02 C240 built in 8/01 has the rear vent, but not the fan blower. It does have the ventilation lever. The documentation may not have kept up w/ the production mods. The coupe probably doesn't have the rear vent, so it might still have the vent in the box.

I asked my dealer about this. I was told that it no longer has the switch to turn it on or off but a vent still exists. If you are driving on a hot day with climate control put your hand in there and you'll feel the cool air trickle in.

No, the Coupé (ours was built April 8, 2002) DOES have the adjustable rear seat air vents in the back of the console, and they actually work, too! The lower box under the armrest has a vent and a lever in it too. I wonder why M-B decided the sedan needed a booster fan in there? Our unboosted one works well enough...

Probably because the sedan's rear seats are intended to be used more frequently (and heavily) than the coupe's.

The C320 still comes standard with the fan. I have had passengers in the back seat who have used the fan, and it works really well. With the front on "Auto", sometimes the fan speed is minimal. With the rear seat fan, they can still get good air circulation without having to adjust the front.

As far as the compartment (in the C320 it's almost unusable because of the fan), I'm not sure if it's ventilated.

Yeah, I wish mine had the fan. Actually, the fan was added later in production, not deleted, so I guess all C sedans have it by now.

There should be a Wheel next to the vent to control the fan. You will know that you have the fan because there is a big fan box inside the middle compartment.

I was under the impression that the C240 did not have this fan. When I test drove the C240 (same time as the C320) it did not have the fan. I also thought I remembered reading this in the manual. I could be wrong though....

The rear fan unit comes with the Digital Display Climate Control Option on the C240. (Standard on the 2002 C320) If you have the Standard Knob turning Climate Control, the lever is still inside the bottom compartment.

Is the fan control the wheel with the white marking, as on the dash? I thought that was just to open or close the vents. Or maybe the '01 C320 does not have the separate fan?

I don't think the '01 C320 has it -- MB-BOB doesn't have the fan on his.

Yes, it's just the illuminated one on the dash. If you push it all the way up, the fan will turn on. There are 3 or 4 more clicks to adjust the speed of the fan.

I found it out the hard way also (Forgot to RTFM): Was wondering why isn't there air flowing out of the rear vent, played around with that thing and bang, the fan switched on!
