I don't understand what'S all the fighting here? Did anybody here buy their car to race or what? I don't get it.

I haven't red the whole thread, but I know for a fact that a c240 will beat an auto 1.8 c230 at +110 kmh ( 80 mph ? ) but it's a whole different story against a 2.3

Let's all enjoy our car, 1.8, 2.3, 2.6, 3.2..... They're all as beautiful and safe as the other

Yes and I have mentioned this 2 years ago against a 2003 kompressor..

but I've never been able to gain on it from a dead start, only from a rolling start over 100-110 km/h...

I will say the difference between the 240 and 230 1.8 in terms of hp the difference in acceleration should be tremendous. The gearing is the same is both vehicles a/t to a/t.

For comparing the hp difference in terms of acceleration, look at the new Accord I-4 manual compared with the previous gen Accord V-6. The new Accord has a 160 hp I-4 with 161 lbft of torque, and the prev gen Accord has a 200hp V-6 with 195 lbft of torque. The 5sp 4cyl is geared way more aggresively than the A/T V-6. The V-6 Accord smokes the I-4 at any time uphill or down, loaded or empty.

This is similar in power difference to the 189hp 1.8 with 192 lb ft vs the 168 hp 2.6 with 177 lb ft. The 1.8 should waste the 2.6 at any moment in any situation without question.

The gearing in the V-6 Accord is terrible (45,65,115,airdrag at 130) compared with the 5sp I-4 and the V-6 Accord is heavier compared with the I-4.

Even look at the acceleration difference between the VW Passat 1.8 vs the 2.8. The stupid Pissant V-6 has 20h.p on the 1.8 and is heavier and will also kill it any time.

I consulted a not very knowlegeable tuner who suggested the C230WZ had wheels and brakes that were significantly heavier than those on the C240 which is why they are similar in performance. I find that hard to believe, however I see under extreme situations how that may make sense. Let's dyno the 2.6 and 1.8 and see what the actual power is. I find it would be funny if MBZ actually installed the 163ps 1.8 in our cars from the C200. That makes sense after racing the 240 and 230 that they actually have similar power.

And no the C230k's dont have a chance against me at a stoplight. 500 hp is always a nice buffer

From my experience I live in south florida and we have quite an older crowd down here so there are plenty of C240'c around. I have honestly raced 3 of them since I am in the "drive hard" mood since I just got my car 8 weeks ago. I raced 2 C240's off the line and I trashed them from 0-60 by almost 1.5 car lengths, and these were not old people driving. Then I raced one on I-95 around 6am, we were both going around 65 mph and we both got stuck behind some slow cars holding up traffic. We both got around the crowd at the same time and he gunned it as did I, we went up to 110mph and once again he could not keep up. I got a real good feel for my car so I can manipulate the engine pretty well...Either way not to say the other responses are wrong or right, I am just stating what I have experienced. I can't see a C240 ******* a C230 SS, it's just one of those things that I would have to see with my own eyes.

This is such a **** thread. ****heads posting crap about how a V6 is always faster than a four banger. Give it up already. Its the same car...same everything else...one engine makes over 20HP more than the other one, and a lot more torque everywhere in the rev band. There is no way for the C240 to win this at any speed. If it does, you rigged it, or modded the C240. Period. Anything else is just pure bull***** on the part of ill informed idiot of a poster.

In reality, I just got back from willow springs international raceway. It was a blast. The C55 owner that I chaed for 3 sessions clearly did not like a a C32 making him look bad so he packed up and went home at lunch!

No i dont street race. An empty road in the middle of no where is normally safe. I am talking about a road where an avg of 1 car passes by each 4 hr period and which is straight for 17 miles with perfect visibility.

So thank you for the warning. I hope you never exceed the posted speed limit mom.

You are misinformed is all I can think of.

Here is a copy of an e-mail I just received from a C32 owner who has a C240 as a loaner right now. He drove my daily driver C230k Friday because I was driving his C32 after we used it earlier that day. His opinion as to power delivery I think is more valid than yours. Something about 10 years of racing and lap times far father than any other C32 owner seem to point to a high level of skill and an ability to understand cars.

More low end torque? My gawd man, the C32 owner is dumber than you? A C240 has only 177lbs-ft of torque, and that doesn't arrive until, get this, 4,700RPM!!!! This dead pig of a motor is fast approaching red line. The C230's 1.8 makes 192lbs-ft at a MUCH lower 3500rpm, and maintains all the way to 4500RPM. If that's not enough for you and the clueless C32er, the C230 is 100lbs lighter!

From now on, don't post about anything...just send an email to a C32 owner.

Now, if you guys want to rethink this, and just say, well the C240's v6 sounds faster, sure, I'll buy that. Unless you got the windows down, and can hear the blower, the growl of the v6 induction is sportier sounding than the drowning the 1.8 makes in the cabin. There's just too much in the C230's favor for the C240 to even have a chance.

Uh gentlemen,
My my how crazy this thread has become. I did not start this thread to bring up hostility. I started it to see what the general opinion on the entire w203 MB line was, particularly the w203 c230 ss. It's not to say that one is better than the other. Personally, I love MB period. I bought this car because we all now currently in it's class it is one of the hotttttteeeeesssssttttt vehicles out there to have and I owned the previous model w202. I do like my vehicle with some perfomance. The cars title says sport and kompressor on it so the reason for my question is that I want some level of performance that comes with this territory. On the other hand it is definitely not a race car! If money was no question and you wanted a race car we'd all be driving ferrari's, SLR, and lambo's etc.

When you respond to this current topic be respectful of what you say and how you say it because it is not right to totally trash a certain C class model vs another especially when all of us own these great german machines.

Having said that I wanted to say two things:
1) I would love for the gentleman expressing the controversy over the c240 beating a c230 ss to show us some proof of this claim. I originally compared this car to my w202 99, but its ok and I am curious about this supposed claim. I would also like to see a w202 99 vs an 05 w203 ss(NOT ON PAPER OR FORUM TALKS- SHOW VIDEO IF POSSIBLE. It seems my request for everyone to drive these different vehicles and compare them has been met buy some and I think we would like to hear and see their results and opinions.

2) For those interested, since I began this thread and my encounter with the SAturn...( i know pathetic) I have had some interesting experiences. I was provoked by a V8 Nissan titan ppick up truck into a race on the GSP in NJ very busy HIGHWAY. Make a long story short I won.... started at 65 he cut me off i got ahead and he floored it. My agility vs a truck allowed me to better maneuver. However, once he passed all cars he was on my *** like white on rice. I could not shake this dude. My car just hit 1000 and I had never been past 100mph. Well I took it there...... and once again extremely slow from 100-120, but handling was great!!!!!!!!! Now how did I beat him---driving skills. On a couple of straight aways he would come flying down right behind me. I would maneuver and he was amazingly agile for a truck that size, but when he got too close I would go from about 110mph - 108 and step on it. Don't ask me why but it worked. It's as if the kompressor had kicked in again for a last burst and I jumped car lengths ahead not to mention the weight advantage. NOT SO SLOW AT ALL NOW ARE WE. iF THIS WERE A CAR PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE TELLING THIS STORY THOUGH IT DEPENDS.
I also beat a chevy corsica of the line v6 definitely with about 200- some hp I think. Not Bad for a 4 cylinder huh.

See it's what you make of your car and knowing when to pick your battles and with whom if your going to be an idiot like me and race these fine german machines eventhough you may be the underdog or may not even be asking for a fight and want to have some fun.

From the numbers the C230k SHOULD be faster but in reality is not. When I purchased a daily driver I thought the C230k was a great value and that it was a better car when stacked up against the equally priced C240. The C230k is faster to 60 but after that if falls apart. Is this a heat soaking issue for the blower? Is this an issue of DME dialing back timing because of terrible gas in California? Who knows? I only can say that the while 2004 C240 loaner was gone after 80. Once the C230k shifted into 3rd the 1.5 car length lead started to vanish and soon enough I was reading the rear deck lid of a W203.

It read "C240"

Doc, Dont underestimate trucks!!! Especially the 1500 class trucks from the Big Three (Dodge Ram 1500, Ford F-150, and the GM 1500) with the diesel engines!!! The new Dodge 6.0 Turbodiesel... was driving next to one the other night, I new I would have lost! 600 ft-lbs of tourqe! Not to mention you can buy a programmer for $200 that can easily give you an extra 200!

Wow has this become quite the subject, in my previous post I posted that I raced a C240 3 different times so that might of sounded like I am a puck with his windows down blasting music trying to race everything I see. But that is not the case, to "RICK" who said racing should be for the racetrack only not common roads....I agree with you 110%. But to be honest my car that I got into 8 weeks ago is my first MB and I very excited about it. I do not go around looking to so called race somebody, but I am interested to know what my car can handle. I also failed to mention that all 3 of these times I went at it with a C240 there was barely anybody on the road. I consider myself a safe driver so sorry if I gave off the wrong impression....And my final say on this subject is that both the C240's and the C230's are nice cars with different types of engines. On paper, on MBUSA.com, and just about everywhere else the C230 is known as the faster of the two...so until I see with my own two eyes a C240 ******* me in my C230 SS I will go with what my experiecne has shown me and what MB says....

I just got my Black 05' 230 SS like 3 weeks ago...got like 900 miles on it so engines still breakin in....my car feels much slower than my brothers IS300, his just pulls harder..anyways searched the forums is there any drop in filters for the 05' 230 that actually produce a couple horses?

lol at least my car gets good gas mileage :-)
