Do we still need the factory installed navigation system?

I am thinking about buying the 2008 c class and wondering if it makes sense to just buy a portable navigations system instead of the factory installed. The quality of the portable Navigation system has improved in last couple of years and they cost much less compare to ~$2000 option. The other benefit is that you only need one Navigation system compare to having Navigation system installed in each car. What you guys think....?

Portable navigation certainly will be cheaper and more functional. I'd rather car makers give certain open interface when any 3rd party navigation can be plugged and use car's screen, audio, and so on. Since I do not buy cars, navigation cost is diluted in monthly payments, so I still getting base navigation for convenience purpose (I do not need extra connectors, car stereo is muted when navigation talks, and so on).
