We haven’t filled the tank yet, will get to that this weekend and pencil out the actual mpg figures for last week. Just wondering what some of you are actually getting from your C300/ 350? The trip computer is telling us 20.1-20.5 ish my wife drives like a grandma but I’ve had a couple spirited runs on the highway and through some twisties on the current tank too.

I'll have a really good answer for you shortly, because we are about to launch into a long [5000 miles] road trip starting tomorrow.

Up to now, with only about 250 miles on the car, and with the tank filled by the dealer [and thus no real knowledge of how full it was to start with], our first stop yielded somewhere in the range of 22 mpg.

This is a C300 Automatic Lux [no staggered wheels, no summer tire compound], and is about 50-50 split between pure city driving and short suburban freeway runs. And of course, the engine is still greener than grass...as it loosens up, things will no doubt improve.

As an aside, our fully-broken-in '02 C240 would struggle to get 20 mpg under the same conditions...40% more power with 10% LESS fuel used....sounds pretty good to me.

I'll be reporting in from the road as we move along. Better numbers in the next couple of weeks....

I would love to get away in the C and take a 5000+ mile trip. Got to keep working though.

Day One Trip Report

On the first day, we covered 530 miles from our home [just across the river from Portland OR] to our overnight stop in Williams CA. Average speeds were 70-75 mph, with occasional bursts to 85-90, temps were near 100F at the end, and this trip requires a climb from sea level to 4000 feet and back down again, in multiple steps....result was just about 27 mpg exactly.

The engine still has only 800 miles on it, so we are a long way from seeing best fuel consumption. I'm happy with this number, especially since my calculations suggest we were/are carrying a total load that approaches 600 lbs [total allowable payload is somewhere north of 800 lbs]. This also validates the new EPA test, which rates our car at 18 / 26.

I'm really in love with the seamless power, and wonderful ride....more as the trip continues.

Thanks John for the report, I just filled up today and while my wife drives mostly mixed city/ hwy her first recorded tank was 22 mpg, I'm good with that and know it will get better. I too agree with you on the linear power band and seamless power, I speak as a C300 owner as well and this engine is more than adequate for the task of moving this car at a spirited pace.
