Oil consumption

I have a C180 with 25,000km. A few days ago a message came on to "check the engine oil level at next refueling". When I did the level was below the min mark. i added 2 liters of oil and the level came up to betweem min and max.

1. Is it normal to have used so much oil?
2. Could the engine been damaged because of the low ooil level?
3. Why the message did not come up ealier?

Thanks

It is not normal but not impossible. Remember to check oil level every month as a minimum and with VERY cold car (best is early morning before starting the engine). MB cars do not show the real oil level after few minutes. Anyway, I do not think that are problems in your car; MB is too great elbeit the electronic not in line...cheers
