Why is Mercedes so stupid?
Boy, are you uninformed on this one. First of all, easy entry is tied into seat memory and right mirror tiltdown and is easily the most trouble prone sytem in the car. And, there is collateral damage. The warranty repairs just on these components has to run in the millions.
My '01 C320 has easy entry and the problems related to it started when the car was new and continue to this day, regardless of how many times the seat memory module has been replaced. More times than I can count.
For those who don't know what easy entry is, when you pull the key out of the slot, the steering column motors up and the seat motors back. When you reinsert the key, the process is supposed to reverse itself. The common failure is that the seat comes forward to the position set in memory but the column does not come down. This still happens about 1/2 the time but I just push the memory button on the door to bring it down or use the control on the dash. The other very common intermittent failure is the right mirror tilts down when reverse is selected but then fails to come back up. This is also controlled by the same memory module.
Another hidden problem is that every time you get in or out, the seat moves a little bit and over time the tracks wear out. My driver's seat track lost a tooth or two because of this and the whole seat bottom, tracks, memory module and all were replaced under warranty, of course.
So, taking away seat memory and eliminating all these features we have been complaining about losing is a way to cut down on the warranty claims on a system MB could never get right.
I still want it as an option.
The SLR's one and only transmission is a five speed automatic with various modes including one they refer as "manual" but is not.

.Gave the dealer a deposit on Labor Day but I don't have an order date or anything like that...
AJ
It was the predecessor to the C class sedan.
Mine was a 2.4l w/5 speed- it was a sweet car- transmission was silky smooth. And the car was also quite sporty in its day.
I remember the 190E very well. I bought two of them new. First, an '85 which was the worst car I ever owned and then an '89 2.6 which was better but still unreliable.
The '85 spent many days at the dealer during the four years I put up with it, with repairs to every major component and most of the minor ones. The '89's repair history included a head overhaul and new rings at 70K miles because of a factory error in assembly. All covered by the warranty, thank God.
At the time there were six friends in my social circle with '85-'86 190Es and all but one were the same and they all dumped them after a few years because they were fed up with fixing them.
The dealers hated them, too.
