Do all W204's run rich?
Our car now has 7XXX miles YTD and my wife and I just took it on an 800 mile round trip. I averaged 80/85 mph the whole way, lot's of cruise control etc.. and a few sprints to get around slow moving trucks etc.. I've noticed since day one the inside of the exhaust tips were clean as a whistle, now they are black & sooty and even around the outer edge/ lip of the tips like a diesel? I know it's somewhat normal but it's just like all of a sudden I noticed it the otherday after washing it.

although my car is a W203, I have the same 3.5L M272 engine as the W204's. My car did the same thing for the first couple thousand miles but it stopped completely. I am very particular about cleaning my car and have noticed a dramatic decrease in soot from the exhaust

Haven't bothered to look at ours [5300 miles now], but my first reaction is fuel - where purchased, from whom, time of year, how much ethanol [or other oxygenates]....these variables are much more likely suspects than anything that the engine computer is doing.

Rich?

It is entirely normal. No, they don't run rich. This question came up back when cats were first used in the 80s or before.

I have noticed the same thing from both exhaust tips... Not a ton of soot, just around the bottom half of each... BTW, I'm at 4200 miles at the moment...

After first reading this thread, I took a closer look yesterday - the insides of the exhaust tips are a dark gray, almost black - and as far as I can remember, have been this way pretty much since the first week.
Nothing untoward here.
