<<CarGuru;
Both of my porsche's don't have this feature, I'm not surprised about the '88 but no just checked my 2002 doesn't either. I've been a car nut since I was born and used to teardown my Tonka equipment and grew up with my parent owning and having an '88 Audi 5000 CS Quattro, '83 I believe 450SL, Dad had an '84 944 then later my folks had an '90 Audi V8 then I drove namely Japanese brand through the import car boom and now at 29 y/o I have my first personal Teutonic cars.... I guess I missed all that research on headlamp switches after all these years.-Ryan>>
Here's a quote from the 1988 911 owner's manual from a friend who has one:
<<According to the '88 owners manual, which I happened to have a copy of,
the '88 does have the parking light function you mention; with the
ignition off, if the turn signal is in the lever up position, the right
front and rear parking lights will be on and if the lever is down, it
will be the left front and rear parking lights that will come on.>>
Perhaps you have a malfunction?

Don't forget, the streets in Europe are very narrow and now they park with on set of wheels on top of the curbs/sidewalks to make more room for traffic.
The two sides parking lights are on MB cars every since I can remember. When you park a car there, you put the lights on, to mark your car so it does not get hit.
Since they do that on one way streets too, parking on both sides, you have to be able to mark your car either on the right or left side. It's just a safety feature and they never had a battery issue.
