Can I? - Is there?

Can you check the oil level in the new C Class Mercedes? Is there a dip stick?

Thanks for any information.

You can check the engine oil in a Class 220CDI with the dipstick . It takes 2 litres to fill from the low to high mark.
Interestingly there is no dipstick in the auto trans oil filler cap.The dealer has one though!!

After searching this weekend, I found the dipstick. It does not have the yellow loop as shown in the manual. Instead, it is light blue in color and is hard to see/reach in the far back of the engine--near the firewall.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but there does not seem to be any way to check the oil level using the computer on the '08s. But if the level becomes low, we "should" receive a warning message.

I called the dealership service department, today, and was told that there is a way to check it using the computer. But I think the tech was just guessing based on previous models.

Mercedes seems to think owners should not bother with such things. They make it hard to check the oil level and also do not even publish the required oil specs in the manual.

Again, you can't check the oil level via the computer on the newer engines. A dipstick is provided.

You car WILL however, tell you if the oil is low

At the rear of the engine between engine and firewall. It is down a couple inches and light blue in color. Almost looks like a stopper rather than a dipstick. Once you find it you will think it is for the automatic transmission fluid, but it is the engine oil dipstick.

Not sure if this is the reason for removing the option to check the oil through the computer or not, but BMW has a known problem with 2007-2008 cars that will throw up low oil or no oil malfunctions. One customer even said that while durring a test drive of a new car the malfunction happened. I noticed MB took this option out of the cars and gave us a tried and true dipstick, which is good...with something as important as oil level I feel better not trusting what a computer tells me.

Oil indicators on the dash should be reliable by now. My 15 year old Peugeot diesel 405 has one & it has operated perfectly ie shows the oil level for a few seconds when the ignition switch is turned on.

Good grief, people - read the manual, find the dipstick, use it.

The electronic oil level monitoring has been nothing but a headache for both MB and BMW. Give Mercedes credit for admitting it was a mistake and going back to the only method you can really trust. Yes, some BMW owners have had ridiculous experiences, with dealers overfilling the crankcase, then having to drain it all off and refilling it again, just trying to get the right amount of oil in the engine. Be thankful you are spared this nonsense!

This month's Roundel [BMWCCA] has a letter from an owner whose NEW car had sat on the lot for a long time, and had a gunked-up oil sensor, with subsequent false readiings that led to a Chaplinesque set of events at the dealership. BMW club people are livid at the loss of the dipstick.

The owners manual does not match the actual new vehicle. In the owners manual it shows a yellow loop near the rear of the engine. This is the dipstick. However, the new C300 does not have this. Instead, the dipstick is hidden below the back of the engine; is blue not yellow; does not have a loop to pull out.

This is my first Mercedes in many years. So far I am not impressed with the owners' documentation.

Ours has a yellow, loop-handled dipstick, exactly as shown in the owner's manual. [2008 C300 produced in Bremen in June'07]. It's at the back of the engine, near the firewall, offset to the passenger's side.

It's possible something has changed in production. Check with your dealer if in doubt. All I can say is that our car's engine compartment looks exactly as it appears in the manual illustrations.

Ours is a new production from Germany, also. It arrived at dealership 10 days ago. We took delivery last week. I do not need to contact the dealer. I found the dipstick. It is just that they have changed the style and color, and now it is very hard to find and reach without the previous loop handle.
