Side marker lights at each corner of the car for the US market are required by US law. The turn signal repeaters in the mirrors do not qualify for that purpose.
It is now more than forty years since this requirement went into effect. The first examples (1968) were reflectors which soon after, became lights. Some are integrated in to the side of the parking and tail lights and some are not.
Even though the manufacturers are required to install certain equipment, there is no requirement that the car owner keep it, as installed. Except emission equipment in certain states.

Clear side markers
When I first saw the photos, I though they would look good on my C300. Anything would be an improvement over the stock unit.
But, three questions came to mind.
On a white car, they are fantastic. But on a dark colored car, will that gray border be too prominent? Mine is Barolo Red.
What about water intrusion? Is there a seal under the outside portion to keep water out of the lamp bucket?
And when they appear on Ebay, what will they be called?

I agree they look GREAT on your white car. I bought tinted covers for my mirrors and side markers and have yet to put them on. Maybe tomorow will be a nice weather day. I think the darker cars would benefit more from tint than clear markers.

They are sealed just like OEs. There is a lamp bucket that is sealed to the lense and an additonal bucket that the whole unit rests in that holds it in the bumper via two hinges and a clip.
I am not sure what they will be called on eBay. The seller is going to send me a link. I'll remind to send it at the appropriate time. I think he wants to offer a group buy.

Clear lamp questions
<<There will be smoked units. The grey border is the housing (bucket) showing through the lense.............>>
Thank you, I will get in on the group buy when it's available.
And, just yesterday I recognized what your avatar is. Even having driven thousands of European miles, it didn't dawn on me..........

Thanks. They will be available in 2-4 weeks. I think the seller prefers to wait until then to release info so he is not bombarded with requests for something he does not have yet.

Clear or smoked?
<<With that Barolo Red, are you shooting for clear or smoked? I've been thinking about getting them too, but I think that the smoked lens would better disguise the grey border.>>
Very good point which will require some thought. Maybe I should let you order the wrong one so I can profit from someone else's mistake.
I would be concerned that whatever light those tiny silvertipped bulbs put out would be lost in the smoked plastic. The lights, ugly as they are in orange, do have a function, after all.
