Trailer Hitch

Haven't been able to find anyone who makes a hitch for our C's yet. I'm selling my boat and buying a wave runner and would like to pull it with the C.

Any news?

lol. I'm on here all the time and never saw the thread.

That's in the w203 section though. Unless the hitch for that car and mine are the same (which would be news to me) then I retract my previous statement.

:p

There IS only one hit for "trailer hitch" in the W204 section.

Still, it is funny.

What did you tow the boat with?

I've been on plenty of ramps where 4 wheel drive was necessary due to the wet algae covered ramp. I think it'd be pretty funny to watch a benz at 6,000 RPM trying desperately to keep from sliding into the water.

Better off towing your wave runner with something that was designed for towing than trying to show off a benz at a boat ramp.

So I'm not the only one without a life that observes boat ramp antics for the entertainment value?

My 1990 Ford Bronco II. The transmission went out and I'm just gonna sell it, not going to fix it.

The c300 is more than adequate to launch and pull out a wave runner, 6,000 RPMs are not needed. It has more torque than my 2.8L Bronco does (2wd), and that pulled the boat in and out just fine. Suspension is also not an issue on the Benz as the tongue weight on a wave runner trailer is that of a pre-pubescent boy.

Now that we're covered that, any inputs on actual trailer hitches and not personal opinions on my towing choices would be appreciated.

I think you're missing something in your argument.
Using a 2WD / REAR WD vehicle on a boat ramp can turn ugly depending on how the ramp is setup and if your rear wheels end up on the wet algae.
I'm sure plenty of people use them with no problem, but it's something I'd be concerned about.

I don't know if this helps but Bosal do a tow hitch available in UK/Europe. I know you can get Bosal Exhausts in the US but not sure about tow hitch, might be worth giving them a call.

I personally wouldn't take my C300 (or any other car I care about, regardless of monetary value) on a wet, slippery, and sloped surface with added weight in the back. It'll be fine 99.99% of the time, but one accident is one too many, in my HUMBLE opinion. But hey, it's the OP's car, so really, who cares?

I have no relevant information to offer. I apologize for this useless post. I had to say it despite the OP's request above. Good luck in your search, OP.

sidenote: MachesterMerc: I really like your signature pic. Why does it look so much cooler with the right-hand side setup? I've never thought this about any other car before... hmmm... weird.

For those of you who are more mechanically inclined than I am, I do have a question that may be relevant to the OP:

In such a situation as described above (boat ramp with wet algae), what would be better: 1. pulling from the front (FWD) or 2. pushing from the back (RWD)?

Obviously, pulling/pushing from all four corners (4WD/AWD) is superior to either method. But in a 2WD car?

Thanks for the info Manchester...I'll give them a try.

Narky, that's a good question. I honestly can't decide which would be more beneficial, I've seen many FWD cars pulling out wave runners with no issue.

Front wheel drive would obviously be better because you're backing the vehicle onto the ramp and the rear wheels are far more likely to be on a wet / algae covered area of the ramp. The front wheels are much more likely to be high and dry therefore getting much better traction.

Well, there's not much weight on the front thought, so it can still cause the car to not get much grip.

I had a hitch installed on my E500 wagon by Hitch King in Queens, NY. I had called a dozen other places and they all said there was no hitch for the wagon. Turns out the sedan hitch worked fine.

So, now I have a C300 4matic and need a hitch to tow my Honda Aquatrax PWC. HItch King took measurments and contacted Curt Hitches in Wisconsin. They had a customer bring in a C300 Monday and will be producing a prototype which will be shipped to Hitch King for my car. I will post further info after I get the hitch.

I"m also looking for a roof rack for my Yakima box and ski rack. It's not about showing off but about the car being useful and adapting it to my lifestyle.

Well done Schutzee. Persistance pays off. You don't seem to take NO for an answer. My 220CDI is adapting to my lifestyle also by towing huge trailer loads of cow & chook manure for the vegie garden. It has been bogged twice in the paddock!! Carsy John.

My C300 has adapted nicely to my lifestyle.

It's sitting out in the garage doing absolutely nothing.

BTW, vas ist chook manure?

Chook manure is the vernacular for fowl manure or hen s*it.

look into german websides, there are many companies who sell them.
rameder.de is one of them.
they are specialy made for each type of car and fit into the bumber(no messy rusty pice of metal sticking out.
they offer the electrical cableset as well, witch you need, because with an handknitted electrical connection on a mercedes you are asking for trouble.(and troublecodes)

Yet another useless post, but I can just recommend getting one of these instead of using a small sedan:

Ecxellent point. I'm very fortunate to have a Jeep for such issues, but if I didn't I'd be sporting the roof rack, too. Best of luck getting what you need.

The customer who went to Curt had a 2007. Anyone near Eau Claire, WI want to visit Curt. You will get a free hitch and I will be able to buy one! It's not worth $500 in gas for me to drive to Wisconsin.
