Unusual Tyre Wear

Has anyone noticed any unusual tyre wear with their W204 C Class ? Every vehicle has its idiosyncrasys as far as tyre wear eg inner edges worn on some rear drive vehicles. This information may help some of us to rotate tyres more effectively.

Ours has the USA standard 17" [from the Avantgarde] non-staggered 225/45x17 Contis.

At 8300 miles, wear is even all around. I rotate the tires myself at 2500-3000 mile intervals, and use a rotation pattern that moves them from side to side, not just front to back, [RF to LR to LF to RR to RF]. This brings the two rears to the front on the same side, and moves the two fronts to the rear on the opposite side. Wear is even and light using this approach.

Staggered wheels present problems that I choose to avoid - I won't drive a car with different sized front and rear tires. This is often compounded by the use of uni-directional tread patterns, another design I go out of my way to avoid.

My experience suggests that this chassis [W204] has the potential to be very easy on tires, but the North American market gets so many staggered setups with summer tires that go away fast that I suspect my experience isn't going to be the average one.

So - it depends.....as usual.....

Given a Classic 220CDI, if you rotate your [16"??] standard, non-staggered tires at 5000km intervals using my pattern, your expectations should be 40-50k miles or 70-85k kms, and no issues.

So far, 10K miles, no noticeable wear. 17s, staggered.

I share the concerns about short tire life, but then I've had 80K tires and after a while I'm just wishing they'd wear out ...they may be loud, or hard riding. So if these tires last 40K I'll be happy.

Rotate? I don't see how, so they probably won't be rotated, ever.

Jrct 9454 ,Many thanks for your helpful reply .I will be impressed if I achieve 70,000 km from my 16" tyres.
Thanks also Jstaneff.

I don't expect the new W204 to be much different from my C280 (same engine, very similar except 17" instead of 16" wheels...)

I got 50k miles out of the same tires by rotating them every 6k miles. But they were michellin's....

18's - I had to buy a new rear set after 13k miles... Complete inner wear of the rears with zero (0) wear to the fronts.

P.S. - I drive like a grandpa... Well, most of the time
