ghetto
1611, from It. ghetto "part of a city to which Jews are restricted," various theories of its origin include: Yiddish get "deed of separation;" special use of Venetian getto "foundry" (there was one near the site of that city's ghetto in 1516); Egitto "Egypt," from L. Aegyptus (presumably in memory of the exile); or It. borghetto "small section of a town" (dim. of borgo, of Gmc. origin, see borough). Extended 1892 to crowded urban quarters of other minority groups. Ghetto-blaster "large portable stereo" is from 1982.

Sorry I just want to apologize for getting offended. I would also like to plead my case. I am not uneducated as some are inclined to believe. I was a biology major at UC Irvine class of 2007 with extensive studies in anthropology and African American Studies. I will be matriculating into a premedical masters program this august.

To the OP:
The rims look tight on the car! Drop!
I was gone for the weekend... looks like a mention of the mods scared him straight into taking out all the bravado and the gangsta talk. The "BTCH!" and all... If you are about to enter a master's program, that house ain't even yours! It's your parents! Your parents' money != your money.
Stop getting so butthurt about the word "ghetto" everyone. I think contemporary American vernacular no longer associates the word with a derogatory reference to African-Americans. At least such is true here in the Bay Area. I use the term often (among friends, never in a professional setting), simply as a replacement for "wack" or "terrible." Kinda like how people use the term "gay" to mean "lame." EX: "That is gaaaaaaaaaaaay," when I mean, "That is so lame."
Though I won't argue that such words aren't offensive to some, I believe too much political correctness is just... well... gay, for a lack of a better word. Sorry, I have some ghetto vocabulary skillzzzzzz.
