when starting from a stop & Go, C mode start from 2nd gear for a smoother start, while S starts from 1st.
they say "S" also tightens up the suspension, but I really can't tell the difference.

You should get your car checked if you don't feel a difference. I can tell a difference easily with mine. Also make sure you don't use the button unless your at a complete stop.

It does, although in the manual it states not to and the dealership told me that it's alot of stress on the tranny to change the modes while in motion.
p.s. Also by doing this you'll actually feel the car use the 1st gear right after activating it instead of the usual second gear (when accelerating from a stand still).

After testing both, I prefer the C mode because, having a Diesel engine, it doesn't make much sense shifting late (high RPMs) because of the lowdown torque at my disposition. Also, much quieter and relaxing in town driving...

" ! Only press program selector button ( C or S) when the selector leaver is in position P,N or D" It does not mention anything about being at a standstill or not.
I also cannot notice any change in auto gb performance whether in C or S.

there is a big difference, if u have track near by then u can actually see the difference, pretty much u hit the gas while in S mode, the transmission wont change gears til its at max rpms for that gear. and it holds it there for a few secs its not a rapid change, u will feel the car hold itself into the next gear.
remember by the time u notice the difference the car will be at 60-70 mphs. lucky me that im in germany and have autobahn to play on, lol.

Same here. I always have it in C mode, as it's way more smooth, and with the huge torque reserve from 1000 rpm all the way to close to the redline, it doesn't make sense to upshift higher up the range.

I still think it's BS. I'm not saying your BS, but the person at the dealership is. Pressing the button just changes the shift points and uses first gear. I can't imagine pressing the button being harmful to the tranny. If it were, wouldn't you think MB would disable usage while in motion?

Yea, I dunno I just feel more secure changing the mode when the car is stopped. Also if you think about it if the car is in motion and you press the button, it has to take in the calculations of changing the tranny mode at the same time be shifting gears and all. Its just common sense that its less stress on the "car itself" by doing it this way.
Oh and in my manual it says the car has to be at rest. (P in the transmission)

Daniel

Thank you all for your answers.
I think if I really want to feel the differnce in transmission performance I'll get a stick shift...but too bad my wife won't able to drive it.

I think we may have different auto GB's. Yours no doubt is a 7 speed , mine a 5 speed!! hence the different instructions. Carsy John.

I switch mine on the fly all the time. I'd like to see some concrete reason for not being able to do so. The only thing that could happen is the car may shift at an unexpecting time. Aside from that, I can't see anything wrong with switching whenever you feel the need.

If your car does not have Advanced Agility Control then your car will not change suspension settings based upon the C/S. Whichever dealertold you this is clearly not in the know how.
Also, the shaking you feel is the car simply changing a gear from (1 to 2) while standing still.
