Adding In Dash Storage

I really wish the C Class had more storage space in the cabin. I would love to have a dedicated place for my sunglasses. It got me thinking that since I do not have heated seats or the rear sunshade, the black panel under my radio is just a big useless piece of plastic and wasted space. Is there much space behind this panel? If so, it may be worth the trouble to figure out how to remove this and replace with some sort of cubby hole. Is there any international market that has this...I guess as standard before the options? Would anyone know where to even begin doing this if not?

I know I was pretty upset when I saw how little storage it had. =\
I just fit things inside the armrest thing. Seems to be ok.

I agree, the A4 has a nice spot in front of the seat, like the E-Class has...... Even the W203 had more compartments......

does any one know what the little holder is for right under the armrest?

My phone is just a little too long to fit there so I really wish MB would have hollowed out the cover a little for that one...other than that, whatever you can fit in there. I am hoping there is 4-6 inches of space behind that dash plate...it may be worth making a friend in the plastic/rubber/aluminum molding bussiness.

In the South African Model, instead of having two cup holders behind the gear lever, we have a recess, with a sliding cover.. that's where I keep keys, sunglasses etc. I'll try take pics later

It's an European car. That holder fits your ciggies.

In my case, it fits a ton of quarters for various parking meters .... And they don't rattle or jingle.

I use it for change, business cards and gas bonus point cars. I do miss the under the front seats storage I had in my A4.

I spoke with an MB guy last night who said there is a decent size space behind the cover as there has to be enough room for the wiring hookups and switches. Now I just need to find an insert for the space. I will have to check out the auto electronics shops and see if they have something that will work.

I asked my dealer a while back. She said it was often used by women to store their rings/jewelry while driving, hence the soft rubber lining. What do I use it for? Gas cards and parking garage tickets.

Top Shelf?? You mean the inset space in front of the radio screen or top shelf of the glove box?

I tried to use it for holding cigarettes, alas i have yet to find boxed ciggs that will fit in there. soft packs do okay if you remove one or two before storing them there. I can remember my last car (c230 Sports Coupe) was the very basic model, it didn't even have electric seats, but it did have a nice silver crevasse for storing sunglasses in the glove compartment. I found it a little disappointing when i got my C300 that there was no designated space for my wayfarers.

you know I find that really funny. The cup holder is actually an option for Euro models, replacing the covered storage unit. Apparently, MBUSA thinks us Americans all drive around with Big Gulps... cup holder is a big thing in America.

In my old CLK, there is the open area at that location you mentioned for putting CDs maybe? I use to put my sunglasses there. Maybe one from the CLK would fit.
