Help Needed from any manual trans owners

Hey guys,
It seems my service advisor is saying that the rubbing/squeaking that I am experencing shifting into 5th and 6th is "normal". They are putting a wax based lube on the rubber boot under the vinyl cover to keep it from squeaking. The problem is that when I took a look at it the other day(after having them fail to attach the shift knob during the service), it seemed like the entire shifter assembly was not centered properly in the center tunnel, therfore causing the rubbing.
Anyhow, has anyone removed their shift knob and taken a look at the rubber boot and base of the shifter underneath? Just curious if anyone has noticed the clearance on the right side being too tight? My new shifter is arriving in the morning and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can finally get my car back with all the issues fixed....
Any advice appreciated!!

mine does it from 1st to 2nd. there is no design flaw. usually goes away once the car has heated up. i've had it disassembled and reassembled so many times now that i'm sure i've pushed it a few millimeters to the left or the right. its officially broken in. one thing you should think about doing is losing the horrible plastic knob. something with a bit of weight will help break the rubber housing in enough that it won't squeak. right now i have a momo, brushed aluminum knob and that helps and matches the int. be careful though...the weight of the knob acts as a counter weight to the shift lever. anything too heavy or too light is bad. also, be careful not to drive with your hand on the shifter all the time. the weight from your arm will wear the urethane bushing.

Hey StickyZ, thanks for the info...I noticed your ride has 5mm spring pads. What is the normal thickness and is this an easy to do mod that won't have a servcie writer acting like it will totally destroy the car? I am wanting to go just a little lower but it seems like 1.4 inches is the minimum drop from new springs, etc. 5-15 mm drop would probably do just fine for me.
Also, how is the xpipe working out for you? I am tempted but still not sure if the 3.0 liter sounds beefy enough to be loud.

I get the same squeak in 5th, especially when it's cold. Haven't been able to get rid of it yet so if you have any luck be sure to share the news.

i'm not sure what the "standard" spring pad height is, in fact i think they range from 11mm to 5mm. i know the lux models are higher, obviously but i guess people with the sports are getting anywhere from 8mm to 5mm, 5 being the lowest you can get. there is no diff in ride as the spring pads do very little. they are all MB pads so the service guys can't give you crap for a swap. if you want a drop go with the super sport HR's. for what its worth, don't look at the mb service guys as anything other than what they are...just guys. a few months ago i asked one dealership ( i no longer go there) how much the resonator weighed and how much they would charge to cut it, i was curious to see what they said and the lecture on warranty i would get. the guy actually told me that our cars didn't have resonators. i promptly paid for my oil filter and left without making a peep.

the x pipe i did two weeks ago. there is someone on the forum that has a white 300 with K&N filters, the stainless x-pipe (2.25") and a few vids (do a search). that is the exact set up as mine and it sounds exactly the same, although i think his is an auto. with the sticks we shift at our own points and usually a lot higher in the band so the pipe is a bit more throaty. don't get confused though, these ain't no 63's. i was lined up at a light next to one last weekend and we were talking through the windows...i rev'd then he rev'd and it sounded like my engine wasn't even running. fyi, pipe fab, cut & weld should run you between 150-200$
